The Sable German Shepherd requires a high quality diet which is rich in protein. This is an athletic and working breed so their diet needs to provide them with the essential energy.

A popular option for this dog is a raw-meat based diet.

However, some raw-based diets do not provide the dog with their essential vitamins and minerals and therefore supplementation and dietary consultation with a veterinarian is critical.

If you opt for a wet or dry kibbled diet, then it is important to ensure that these diets are in accordance with AAFCO regulations.

As a puppy, you should feed your pooch two to three times per day. However, as they mature and become adults two meals a day is fine.

Sables: Genetics And Myths

Revised 2012.

Some time ago, a GSD breeder-judge in Germany wrote an article that was carried on the Internet, entitled The Sable Shepherd A Museum Piece? . Several people have asked me about some of the statements in it, and I thought a magazine or website piece might be the easiest way to answer.

The color pattern we in America call sable is called grau in Germany. Neither word is fully accurate, but experienced dog people know what is meant. The strict translation of what is possibly originally Latin, then Russian-Scandinavian in origin, but is found in variations in many languages including sable in English and French, is black. Actually, even before that meaning, it was the name of a small glossy-black weasel or ermine found in far-northern Europe and Asia. From the Latin zobola, Russian soboli, Scandinavian sabel, and German zobel, we get our word, but not our meaning. It brings a different image in other breeds, such as the Collie, Basenji, and Sheltie where it refers to a reddish-yellow dog. Even in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the sable dog gives mostly an orange impression. In the Shar-Pei, we see a color that looks like the GSD sable, but has a different genetic constitution. There is even the white GSD, some of which appear to be genetically modified sables, but certainly without any black.

Sable Myths

German Shepherd Coat And Skin Care

GSDs do shed, so one of the first things nearly every breeder will tell you is to invest in a good vacuum cleaner! But there are several ways to cut down on the shedding. AKC Breeder of Merit Wendy Wilson of St. Ledgers Shepherds recommends brushing every other day, and says that by doing so, you wont have balls of fur lying around your house.

Wilson advises using a Furminator for this brushing routine, which she likes using for the GSDs double coat because it can reach the undercoat and remove loose hair easily and safely. She finds that a de-shedding brush alone is enough for routine brushing and de-shedding when used correctly. If used incorrectly, the tool can damage your dogs coat.

AKC Breeder of Merit and professional dog trainer Lisa Walsh of Loyalville German Shepherds also recommends the Furminator, which she uses weekly most of the time, increasing in frequency to daily during heavy shedding periods. Like Wilson, she finds the de-shedding tool is enough for routine brushing, although, when she is showing a dog, she will use a slicker brush just before going into the ring.

Wilson advises GSD owners to do the de-shedding outside, due to the amount of fur that will be released from your GSDs coat during a good brushing with this tool. Walsh echoes this sentiment, saying, Its amazing what you can get out in five to ten minutes with a de-shedding tool.

Differentiating Between The Belgian Malinois And The Sable German Shepherd

Belgian Malinois

Although superficially similar in appearance and used for the same tasks , the Belgian Malinois and the German Shepherd have distinct differences. A Belgian Malinois can be a solid red or tan with a black muzzle, or they can be sable. Many people find it difficult at first glance to distinguish between the two breeds when they are both sables.

Physically, the major difference between the two dogs involves their build. German Shepherds are built more prominent than the Belgian Malinois. Male dogs of either breed should be 24 to 26 inches at the withers, but a 26-inch male German Shepherd will typically weigh 80 to 90 pounds while a 26-inch malinois is generally only 65 to 75 pounds.

The other pronounced difference between the breeds is their hind end structure. The Belgian Malinois has a classic endurance trotter canine build, being just slightly longer than they are tall, with a level back, and their hind end angulation matches their front end angulation.

German Shepherds have a unique build among canines. They are significantly longer than they are tall, and their hind ends are more angulated than their front ends, which causes their back to slope downwards from the withers towards the tail.

This peculiar structure allows them to perform a very flashy extended trot. Conformation line breeders have exaggerated these traits to the point that the dogs cant do anything except perform a flashy trot.

What Makes A Dog Sable

Color black is just what is sounds like – completely solid black dog. Below this text is a popular image that is circulating on the web. Many off-color breeders are using it as a proof that their dogs are German Shepherd dogs of AKC recognized “rare” color. Even so, we here at Vom Geliebten Haus, go by the German Shepherd Breed standard and only respect the desired colors of the German Shepherd Dog, that include: black, tan and red. These colors can be present in any of the standard patterns: solid, bi-color, blanket back, sable and saddle.

The coat color may vary although strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out off-colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified.

German Shepherds are one of the worlds most popular dog breeds. This breed of dog is known for its reliability, devotion, and courage, which cannot be matched by any other breed.

As with all other living things, they exist in males and females, and you might be wondering what the difference between the two genders is?

First, lets start with male sable German Shepherds and their traits. Obviously, male Shepherds are bigger and more muscular compared to females.

Also, male German Shepherds tend to be more territorial and object-possessive. Not to worry though, as this problem only occurs when you spoil your canine, allowing it to think its in charge.

Male dogs also prefer to bond with one owner in particular. It also loves the rest of his family, but compared to their owner, theyll pick their owner any day and any time.

Female German Shepherds, on the other hand, tend to be smaller and less muscular than males. Females tend to be less possessive over objects and less territorial than their male counterparts. They love to bond with their owners, who are usually male, and also the rest of their pack.

Also, female German Shepherds tend to be easier to train due to their sensitivity and greater agility, which is naturally inbuilt. They typically mature faster than males, also making them easier to train.

Females are very tolerant of strangers and children, making them wonderful and cool to keep around.
