Working Line German Shepherd Temperament

THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG – Working line or Show?

In terms of personality, working line German shepherds are bred specifically to enhance various drives such as prey, defense, and fight.

And to bond tightly with their handlers in order to have the desire to work for them.

Also, to be exceptionally clear-headed with stable temperaments to follow orders given to them.

West German Shepherd Temperament

These dogs are very devoted to their owners. Thats necessary for dogs that are bred to work closely alongside humans in high-risk environments.

They are very eager to learn and do their best with a purpose. Breeders explicitly focusing on working dogs will likely produce canines more intelligent and more likely to perform well in the field. Theyre breeding dogs that perform well not selecting for physical traits alone.

Many West German Shepherds are very protective of their owners and not as accepting of outsiders.

It does depend on where the dog came from, though. A breeder producing dogs for military and police organizations will often breed very protective dogs on purpose. However, those who are breeding companion animals may produce slightly friendlier dogs.

No German Shepherd is going to be as friendly as a Golden Retriever, though. That isnt in their blood!

    Working Line German Shepherds Generally

The working line German Shepherd is the original breed standard. The Working Line German Shepherd was developed and bred for their capacity to work and not specifically for their physical appearance.

They are highly driven, incredibly energetic, and exceptionally confident dogs that have a high tolerance for pain. All of these traits allow them to perform remarkably not just for herding but also in the police, military, and personal protection work.

To be certified working line German Shepherd dogs, the dogshave to meet very specific physical and mental characteristicsset by TheGerman Shepherd Club of German , along with a few morespecifications. The dogs cannot carry the gene for hip dysplasia and have tohave earned the working title in Schutzhund, Herding or Police Serviceactivities.

Working line German Shepherd dogs have exceptional standards that they must meet:

    • The dog has to be eager to repeatedly perform tasks with confidence and energy.
    • Are required to be loyal and show poise around strangers and children.
    • They are required to have nerves of steel they should not falter from tasks around loud noises like traffic and gunshots.

Unlike their show line counterparts, the working line is smaller and more agile, with a shorter coat so it can perform duties with more ease.

Which Type Of German Shepherd Is Right For You

West German show line German Shepherd puppy meets working line and American show line Shepherds!

There seem to be as many categories of German Shepherds as there are actual German Shepherds. But ultimately, your choice comes down to two options: the working line dogs and the show line ones.

Youve learned more about the specifics of each type within the working and show categories, but here are a few pros and cons to consider which type of GSD is right for you.

    North American Show Lines

The North American Show Line German Shepherd should be considered a breed unto itself: the American German Shepherd. Although these dogs share a common ancestry with their German Shepherd cousins, lax breeding standards in North America have resulted bloodlines that have strayed so far from the original standard, both physically and tempermentally, that the American German Shepherd no longer bears much resemblance to the original German Shepherd. There are no standards to be met prior to breeding a German Shepherd in North America other than registration with the AKC or CKC. Breeding purely to win in the show ring has resulted in a complete loss of the breeds working ability, and the lack of any kind of temperament testing prior to breeding has resulted in dogs with incredible variance in temperament, with no guarantees of the courage or soundness of mind that make GSDs the dog they are meant to be. These dogs tend to carry a black and tan colouration with the traditional black saddle, however breeding for show has resulted in unfortunate changes to the dogs appearance such as extreme angulation of the hindquarters, thinner, daintier bone structure and less physical differentiation between the sexes.

This dog is also from West Germany, but the West German Shepherd Working lines but is bred for success in the IPO world, and not in the show ring. The masculinity and femininity of the sexes is very distinguishable. The structure is built for work, and ability to do jumps and searching for the decoy in the blind and jumps with a dumbbell in its mouth. This dog is higher energy and higher prey drive than the West German Showlines. These dogs can be either pure black, sable, and black and tan. The black and red is not typically found in these lines. The high prey drive, sometimes called high ball drive can be leveraged for I.P.O as well as obedience training, giving the dog an incentive to work for his toy, or prey object. We feel the ratio f prey to defensive drive is higher prey than defensive drive compared to the D.D.R dog, or East German Working lines. The structure of this breed is what leads the dog to do his work, because a dog that doesnt have the proper construction cant work for long hours tending sheep, or doing some of the work the I.P.O trial requires. The dogs are bred with an eye toward working ability first, and looks second, but certainly these are handsome dogs. We feel this line truly represents what the breed was meant to be, a dog that is willing to work and retains working ability as a working breed.

West German Shepherds Need A Lot Of Mental Stimulation

Because theyre bred solely for practical purposes, these canines are extremely smart. While this makes them able to pick up on training very quickly, they also need a lot of mental stimulation.

For this reason, we only recommend them for people who have a lot of extra time on their hands. It will take quite a bit of time each day to keep these dogs entertained. Training is a necessity if only because it challenges your dogs mind.

How To Identify A Working Line German Shepherd

8 Different German Shepherd Coat Color Patterns

To identify a working line German Shepherd, the dogs topline will be straighter than a show line dog, with an arched structure and extremely angled hindquarters. Working lines will have less broad heads and less bulky bodies, and show lines will have longer and thicker coats.

Certain traits show up on a spectrum among working line German Shepherds. By looking for their presence, youll be able to tell that your GSD is a working line dog, and by noticing how prominent said features are, youll know how well-adjusted your German Shepherd is for work.

Lets Start With How German Standards Began

The German shepherd breed was created in 1899 by Captain Max von Stephanitz, in Germany. The captain wished to create a single breed that could serve instead of the several different highly specialized breeds farmers were using to work their flocks of sheep. He dreamt of a single, multi-purposed dog that could herd sheep, protect boundaries, defend against predators, protect the shepherd, his property and his family and still lie down in the house to play with the children at the end of the day. He set out with determination to select the best dogs exhibiting the desired traits and started building his breeding program. He was a very methodical man with a plan, and he produced some very detailed documents to guide breeders in their efforts.

The standard and breed worthiness requirements are recognized internationally and most countries in the world abide by the German standards. So basically, the German shepherd dogs we find worldwide are pretty much the same and compete side by side in local shows and at the World Sieger Show in Germany once a year.

    White Swiss Shepherd Dog

The White Swiss Shepherd Dog is a variety of the German Shepherd bred in Switzerland. It descends from the American White Shepherds the first stud dog of what was to become the breed was an American dog born in 1966 and imported to Switzerland. The variety was recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as a separate breed in 2003, and it is now recognised by a number of national kennel clubs.

    Are Sable German Shepherds Rare

Sable-colored German Shepherds are exceptionally rare. They are enormous, powerful dogs with a lot of energy, making them ideal for heavy work. Despite being bred as herders, they are also highly intelligent and eager to please, making them excellent for training to accomplish difficult jobs such as military and police dog roles.

The German Shepherd’s Sable coat is the result of a dominant gene, and it was the first of the German Shepherd species. It’s also the only coat color that hasn’t deviated from the German Shepherd’s founder’s breed ethic.

The American Kennel Club recognizes German Shepherds, and the sable color is recognized under the breed standard .

    Tracking / Search And Rescue

West German show line vs AKC/CKC show line German Shepherds side by side. BIG DIFFERENCE!

While German Shepherds have an acute sense of smell and the capacity to process different scents, working line GSDs also have the ability to track for long distances. They are also experts in search and rescue and can work for long hours in difficult conditions.

They are used in law enforcement as detection dogs, whether controlled drugs, explosives or bodies. They are also used in the military, as guide dogs, service and therapy dogs.

In a search and rescue scenario, the working line GSD will track the person to be rescued based on scent then even drag or carry them to safety . In rare instances, the dog might have to ward off an attacker who intends to harm the individual being rescued, which brings us to the next way to use a working line GSD.

As someone from a police background, Ive seen countless times, detection dogs indicate a find and its incredible to watch.

    Show Line German Shepherd Dog

Show line is a more friendly German Shepherd type and less energy-driven dog. The first time dog owners and families who want to get a German Shepherd dog usually choose this type of German Shepherd for several different reasons:

    • They are a more friendly dog
    • You dont need to invest much time as for working line
    • They are less expensive
    • Great companion dogs

Show line German Shepherd can also do the same jobs as working line, but usually, the working line will always be more dominant in these jobs.

But this doesnt mean that the working line is better than the show line, everyone has their purpose. For example, in most cases, the show line is almost always a better family dog than the working line, because of its temperament.

As we mentioned before if you will become a first-time dog owner or German Shepherd owner, get a show line. By the time you will realize that you make the right decision.
