How To Draw A Cartoon German Shepherd
In this tutorial, Im going to teach you how to draw a cartoon German Shepherd
I grew up in South Africa and these dogs were EVERYYYWHERE! It seemed every family owned a German Shepherd, except ours but thats okay because these dudes poop like champions.
This tutorial is broken up into three parts:
- the Pencil Sketch laying down our foundation of basic shapes
- the Inking Stage drawing in dark lines for the main shape of our doggy and thin lines for the details
- the Colouring Stage bringing our doggy to life with pencils! You can colour in one layer if you want to, but I encourage you to go over your character with two or three layers, as this will make the colours more vivid and richer.
Anyway! Before we start drawing, lets think about what makes German Shepherds unique from other doggos.
Traits:
The main things that I focus on when drawing a German Shepherd are their big noses, their eyes and the shape of their ears
Most of their coats can be simplified down to two main colours golden brown and a very daaaark brown/black
As for their posture, Im sure there are lots of lazy German Shepherds out there, but in my mind, these doggies always look alert and prepared for guard dog duty .

What Is The Hardest Part Of Learning How To Draw A German Shepherd
For the most part, this tutorial is quite easy and straightforward. The face and fur of a German Shepherd drawing are probably the most time-consuming due to the level of detail required to make them look realistic. However, by following this tutorial, you will find it simple enough to follow the steps needed to create a realistic German Shepherd sketch.
Creating The Head For Your German Shepherd Drawing
The next step in our German Shepherd sketch is quite easy and will not take long to complete. Draw a slightly irregular circle and position it just above the left part of the oval you drew for the body. The irregular shape of the circle is to help with the construction of the head, so keep the left side tilted slightly downward. The top and bottom are slightly flattened, and the right side is tilted slightly upward.

Creating Back Legs For Your German Shepherd
This step follows similar processes to the last one, but the angles differ and the lines used are more curved. Starting with the back leg furthest from us, we will draw a line that slightly curves inward, i.e. towards the edge of your page or canvas. Now, draw a short line that extends outwards towards the left-hand side, and you will have created an ankle!
Now, draw another semicircle for the paw extending from the ankle. Add another line down from the body and connect it to the ankle and paw to finish the leg. For the last back leg, you can go through the same basic steps, but ensure that you make it more curved and thicker than the other one to create a sense of perspective.
The German Shepherd is starting to take shape nicely now, and we can move on to putting on the details to the construction lines!
Adding The Second Coat Of Color
The second coat color you are going to use to create your realistic german shepherd drawing is black. Using a medium brush, add a coat of black paint around the german shepherds muzzle including the lower jaw. Color the nostrils with a lighter shade of grey, and use this same grey to add shading to the inside and outside of the ears, and around the eye.
Continue adding black along the back of the german shepherds spine, including the beck and back, and on the underside of the legs and tail.

Constructing The German Shepherds Front Legs
Because the german shepherd in our sketch is standing still, the two front legs are fairly straight and sit side-by-side. To capture the joint for this realistic german shepherd drawing, you are going to use a total of six lines for the leg closest to us, and four for the back one.
Once again, we need to remember to consider the perspective of our drawing in this step. The leg that is closest to the left side of the canvas is further away from us, and it is therefore slightly shorter and the majority of it is hidden by the leg closest to us.
Begin with the whole leg, which is the one that is closest to us. From about 1/5th of the way into the front of the body oval, draw a line that goes straight down. This line can be slightly angled, but not too much. Now, draw a smaller line that angles slightly towards the front of the german shepherd. To complete this leg, take another line down from the main body at more of an angle, and then draw a matching short line.
You can separate the top and bottom parts of the leg with a single line, and then draw an oval at the end of the leg to represent the foot.
For the second leg, simply draw the far-left line that curves slightly at the top as it leaves the main body oval. draw in the joint and foot construction lines in the same way as you did for the other leg.

For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw two small ovals for the cartoon German shepherd puppy’s eyes. Sketch lightly at first to get the shapes right. Space out the eyes. Don’t draw them too close together. Shade in the ovals but leave a couple of circles blank inside each oval to represent glare. The eye on the right should be a tiny bit smaller than the eye on the left.
Step 2: Below the eye on the right, draw a small sideways oval for the nose. Make the bottom edge of the nose a bit pointy instead of curved. Shade in the dog’s nose but leave a thin strip blank at the top for shine.
Step 3: Draw a curved line on the right side for the muzzle. The German shepherd’s muzzle starts to the right of the nose, then curves down and to the left. Draw a short, curved line for the mouth near the bottom of the muzzle.

Constructing The Ears Of Your Dog
One of the most characteristic features of german shepherds is their large and upright ears. To create the basis for these ears, you can use a simple curved M shape on top of the head construction circle. Although drawing an M shape is fairly simple, you do need to pay attention to the perspective.
The ear towards the front of the head is further away from us, and it will therefore be slightly narrower than the back one because it appears smaller and because the base will be slightly hidden by the ear closest to us.
Finish Off By Drawing The Facial Features
Finalize your German Shepherd artwork by drawing its eyes, nose, as well as the outline of its inner ear.
Starting from top to bottom, draw an upside down V-shaped line parallel to the outline of the German Shepherds ears.
Next, draw a pair of eyes right below its forehead. Now, complete its facial features by drawing a half upside down triangular shape on its snout to form the nose.
Now that we have successfully drawn a German Shepherd, all its missing is a splash of colors to make your drawing vibrant and colorful!
Finally, were now in the most fun and exciting part, which is choosing the colors and coloring your drawing! This is the part where you can show off your artistic skills and your ability to mix and match various colors.
German Shepherd dogs are generally black, grey, or sable in color. There are also some with a combination of the colors black and tan, red and black, and black and silver.

How To Draw A German Shepherds Outline
In this step, all our previously created construction lines will help us to create an outline that follows the shape and contour of our German Shepherd sketch. Starting at the head, draw a line that intersects where the head blocks the back ear.
Now create lines for the ears that are more realistic add lines to the eardrum and inner ear and add an eye on the side in the appropriate place.
The muzzles outline can be followed rather closely, but be sure to add a nose. Once you get to the bottom jaw, do not forget to add details such as canine teeth, other smaller teeth, and the tongue of your German Shepherd. You can add a bulge or two on the bottom of the neck, and then extend that line down towards the legs. Trace the legs as they are, but add short strokes to certain parts to create the impression of fur on the legs at the back.
You can carry on using the same strokes to create a furry-looking belly, as well as tail and back legs. You can then draw a line from the back of the legs to the top of the head to finish off the outline of your realistic German Shepherd drawing. Once all these steps have been completed, you can take your eraser and rub out all the construction lines still visible to you.

A German Shepherds howls due to injury, sickness, separation anxiety, communication, or defence. As German Shepherds are descendants of the wolves, howling comes naturally to them. So, from defining territory and seeking attention to loneliness, the German Shepherds can howl for all of these reasons.

Finishing Your Realistic German Shepherd Drawing
For this very final step, you can make your drawing even more realistic by removing the outline and tracing over your fur strokes with your paint. Use the color that corresponds to that particular part of your german shepherd, and cover any outlines or fine lines that disrupt the realism of your drawing.

Adding The Detailing And Fur
In this step, you are going to add fur detailing throughout the body of your german shepherd sketch. You are also going to add detailing to your german shepherds face.
Begin by adding some shading to the lower half of the german shepherds nostrils and below its jaw. Then, use some short strokes and dots to add some textural shading all around the german shepherds mouth and muzzle. You can also add some shading details to the teeth and the edge of the tongue. To create additional realism in the face of your german shepherd drawing, you can add some shading around the eyes and in the ear curves.
To draw the fur, it is important to consider the shape of your german shepherd. You want the hairlines to flow in the same direction as the body does. For example, the hair on the neck and back should flow downwards towards the back of the canvas. On the belly, tail, and back legs, you can direct the flow of the fur downwards.
For the most realistic german shepherd drawing, make sure that the hair lengths on the head are the shortest, and as you move down the body, they should get longer.
