You can tell how big a German Shepherd will get by first considering the parents genetic makeup and looking at the parents size. You can also refer to a GSD growth chart and check for consistent lag or lead. Additionally, paw size can be an indication of future size, although this is unreliable.
If your dog has consistently been an inch shorter than the charts standard, then you can assume he will be an inch shorter than the charts projected final size.
This also applies to the weight category as well. If your dog is a few lbs over the standard weight, he might weigh as much more by the third year. Weight fluctuates even past the complete development, though.
And that brings us to the alternative scenario: what if your dog is not consistently smaller or bigger than the projected growth chart?
If you notice that your dog is an inch smaller at one stage and half an inch smaller at the next, chances are, your dog is experiencing regular growth spurts as any other German Shepherd except that he is shorter by a set percentage.
In that case, you should refer to the percentage of full weight or height in the German Shepherd growth chart. The chart says that a GSD is at his 50% height by 4 months, for example.

Stand your canine chum up and run your hands over their sides. If you cant feel their ribs or if you cant feel them very well theres too much fat and you have an overweight dog. If theres too much rib, i.e. you cant feel much between your dogs skin and its ribs, you have an underweight dog.

Correct Proportions Of A German Shepherd
According to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, both male and female German Shepherd dogs should have a 10:8.5 ratio of length to height.
Length is measured from the dogs breastbone to the rear edge of its pelvis, and height is measured along the withers.
When your German Shepherd is the ideal weight, you can feel their ribs, although they are not easily seen, and they are not covered in a layer of fat.
There should be a defined waistline when your dog is viewed from above and a noticeable tummy tuck when they are viewed from the side.
How Many Calories Does A German Shepherd Puppy Need
The number of calories that your puppy needs depend on certain factors such as age, weight, and activity level. Active puppies need more calories to sustain their energy levels.
German Shepherd puppies require at least 500 calories per day, but the amount increases as their weight also increases.
You need to calculate the RER of your puppy and multiply by two to know exactly the number of calories they need. The formula of RER is 703/4.
For example, if your German Shepherd puppy weighs 20kgs their RER is 703/4 = 662. Therefore, their daily intake should be 1324 calories.

Body Condition Scale range from 1-9 or 1-5. The ideal BCS for your German Shepherd puppy should be 3/5 or 5/9. This is where the ribs, pelvic bones, and backbone have a very thin layer of fat and is easily palpable.
The tummy tuck should be seen from the side and the waistline should also be visible behind the ribs when seen from above.
