How To Prepare Your Home For Your German Shepherd Puppy

If youre getting a German Shepherd puppy from an Ohio breeder, there are some things you need to do to prepare your home for their arrival.

  • You will need a crate, food and water bowls, a collar and leash, and a bed.
  • Set up a designated area for the puppy to potty. This should be a spot where you can easily clean it up.
  • Buy some toys to keep the puppy entertained.
  • Make sure you have a vet appointment scheduled for the puppy as soon as possible.
  • Puppy proof your home by removing any objects that the puppy could chew on or swallow.
  • You will also need to fence in your backyard if you dont want the puppy to roam around.

When you bring your new German Shepherd puppy home, make sure you take the time to get to know them. Spend time playing with them, training them, and taking them for walks. By doing this, youll help your puppy develop into a well-adjusted adult dog.

Does Your Ohio German Shepherd Breeder Have A Good Veterinarian They Use

If youre buying a German Shepherd puppy, its important to find a breeder that has a good relationship with their veterinarian. This is because your puppy will need regular vet check-ups and vaccinations.

A good breeder will be able to provide you with the contact information for their veterinarian. They should also be willing to let you meet the veterinarian and tour their office.

If your breeder doesnt have a good relationship with their veterinarian, its best to move on.

The Noble German Shepherd Dog

Black German Shepherd Puppies For Sale In Ohio

We do not breed for the show ring, however we do utilize some showlines in our breeding program and we pay close attention to the appearance and structure of our dogs as well as the show ratings and judges’ comments of titled dogs in their pedigrees. In Germany and other European countries, even the working line dogs have to earn good show ratings before being allowed to breed. The GSD is undeniably one of the most ruggedly beautiful and majestic breeds in the world. We love to watch the alert expressions and powerful, graceful movement of our dogs when they are in motion and they recapture our affections every time we look at our handsome dogs. The structure we desire most in our dogs is best captured by the illustration of the standard done by Ernest H. Hart. Our pups have also been popular with youths who compete in 4H and junior handler classes with their dogs. The German Shepherd Dog is also commonly known as the GSD, German police dog, Alsatian and Deutscher Schaferhund. Common misspellings of the breed name are German Sheppard, German Shepard, German Shephard, German Sheperd and German Shepperd. East German working line, DDR, angulation, straight back, Czech Republic border patrol working lines, all are different ways to describe some of the different types and characteristics of these dogs.Colors and Coats of Our Dogs

Genetic Health Problems Of The German Shepherd Puppy

Health problems can manifest early in the life of a German shepherd puppy or appear later in her life. A couple of the most common growth abnormalities are hip and elbow dysplasia. Dysplasia causes joint incongruences that lead to pain and eventual arthritis. Panosteitis is generalized bone inflammation fairly common in German shepherd puppies that causes severe pain and may have a link to overnutrition in fast-growing breeds. The GSD breed can also suffer from diabetes, bloat, hemophilia, von Willebrands disease, epilepsy, and degenerative myelopathy. Large deep-chested breeds are vulnerable to gas distension of the stomach with life-threatening complications such as gastric torsion. Hemophilia and von Willebrands both involve abnormalities in the clotting pathways or factors of blood. Epilepsy is often a genetic problem, and the affected dog will have seizures with no known source. Finally, DM is a progressive neurologic disease. Dogs begin with a weak gait and eventually suffer paralysis. When you are trying to choose from German Shepherd puppies for sale, the AKC recommends you check that the parents have had hip and elbow evaluations. Such thorough analyses may be impossible if you acquire your dog through a German Shepherd rescue.

Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy

One of the most important things you need to do when you bring your German Shepherd puppy home is to start potty training them. There are a few things you can do to make this process easier:

  • Take the puppy outside frequently, especially after they eat or drink.
  • Reward the puppy for going potty in the designated area.
  • Dont punish the puppy for having an accident in the house.
  • Clean up any accidents immediately so the puppy doesnt get confused about where they are supposed to go.
  • It will take some time and patience, but eventually your German Shepherd puppy will learn how to properly potty.

Ask For References From Your German Shepherd Breeder In Ohio

When youve found a breeder that you trust, the next step is to ask for references. Good breeders will be happy to provide references from previous buyers.

This is a great way to get an idea of the quality of the puppies and the level of care that the breeder provides. References can also help you determine whether or not the breeder is reputable.

If a breeder is reluctant to provide references, move on. Theyre either trying to hide something or they simply dont have any happy puppy owners to recommend them.

How To Care Of Your German Shepherd

It is always exciting to bring a new dog home. When you introduce a German shepherd to your family, you may feel you have joined the cool club. You want to provide your Shepherd with the appropriate care. German Shepherds come from a long line of working dogs and a herding heritage. Your GSD will not do well alone nor will she like not having anything to do all day. You need to provide your dog not only with attention, food, and love but also a meaningful job or activity. Agility, Schutzhund, herding, or interactive games can keep your Shepherds mind active. Be imaginative. Your GSD puppy should eat three or four times a day. An adult German shepherd should eat four to six cups of high-quality dog food daily with an animal protein source in the first five ingredients. Divide feedings to help prevent bloat or GDV. Your Shepherd may need as much as two hours of exercise daily. Best results come from breaking physical activities into two or more sessions a day rather than doing all of them at once. For your young German shepherd puppy, you need to focus on not injuring its growth plates. Never pressure a puppy to keep going beyond the point he has indicated he wants to stop. German shepherd puppies need more time than some other dog breeds on socialization. The GSD is beginning to develop a reputation for unprovoked biting and is receiving bans in alarming numbers because of poor breeding, improper training, neglect of socialization, and handler mistreatment.

Look Out For The Signs Of An Unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder In Ohio
