While there are some variations depending on the gender of the animal, generally speaking, a full-grown German Shepherd will stand somewhere between 22 26 inches and weigh around 50 to 90 pounds. This is the average German Shepherd size.

German Shepherds usually get to half their full weight between 4.5 and 6 months, and their adult weight between 12.5-16 months.

You can calculate their potential adult weight at 23 weeks by taking what they weigh at that age and multiplying it by two.

A different formula you could use is:

So, for example, if your 12-week old pup weighs 18 pounds. You simply divide the current weight by their age in weeks and multiply the result with 52:

18/ 12 = 1.51.5 x 52= 78 pounds

78 pounds would be the expected weight of your adult-sized German Shepherd.

No crate is best, exactly, as it totally depends on what you need it for.

I will say that wire crates give you the best value for money and theyre the most practical. This is because they can be collapsed for easy storage, theyre transportable, and you can just buy one and use dividers.

For travel particularly on airplanes plastic crates are the best choice, and these can also be used at home.

If you want your dog to feel comfortable in his crate, choosing the right size is essential.

The crate must be big enough for your pet to sit without crouching, turn around without hitting the walls, and lay down on his side without being cramped. As you can imagine, this means big German Shepherds require a large crate!

You dont want a crate thats too big though especially when your dog is a puppy. A spacious crate may encourage your puppy to use one end of the crate as a toilet. Too much room can also ruin the den feel.

So, how much space do GSDs need?

In general, most German Shepherds require a crate thats around 42-48 in length. Sheps vary in size, however, so heres a quick guide to picking the right size for your pet.

Length

Measure your dog in a standing position from the nose to the base of the tail. Then add 3-5 to provide extra space.

Height

Measure from the floor to the top of your dogs ears while hes in a sitting position.

Again, add 3-5 to ensure your pet has plenty of space.

Weight

Some crates have sizes based on your dogs weight. Make sure your dog fits into these weight guidelines, but dont rely on weight alone to choose a crate size.

What About Puppy Sizes?
