Preventions Of Diseases To Ensure Your German Shepherds Maximum Growth

Another essential thing, you need to know to secure better health and growth for your doggo is the basic knowledge of the diseases a GSD could have and what course of actions, you should take to prevent them.

Basically, If you notice your GSD showing any of the symptoms that I have mentioned below under each disease, hurry and seek out for veterinary help as soon as possible because that may likely mean a serious illness.

Hi, Mr. Human.

Long time no see. Where have you been?

Well, as you know its this time of the year again, my family is chilling with their friends at the beach, so I was thinking of visiting my big German Shepherd friends back home and then Ill join them. Shedding in Dogs Heres the Deal

Germany you mean?

No, I am originally from the USA, one of my parents is a German Shepherd, he is the one from Germany.

Oh, so how your parents met?

Well, I am a dog breed that developed from crossing the German Shepherd dog, with the Shiloh Shepherd dog and Long-Coated European lines of German Shepherd dog along with Malamute in the 1990s. The main goal of this process was to breed a big German Shepherd dog similar to the kind, intelligent, hard worker German Shepherd, but larger and without the existing health and temperament problems. Giant German Shepherd Lifespan And Health Issues: Are They Healthy Dogs

The lifespan of Giant German Shepherds ranges from 10 to 13 years which is quite the same as the normal German Shepherd.

Crossbred dogs are expected to be healthier than purebred ones. However, although they are quite immune to other health problems due to the benefit of cross breeding, there are still health conditions that are common for Giant German Shepherd breeds.

Nonetheless, both King Shepherd and Shilo Shepherd are just like other dog breeds vulnerable if not well taken care of.

Here are the common health issues among Giant German Shepherds:

  • Joint Dysplasia: This is an abnormal formation of joints that can eventually cause lameness, instability, weakness, and pain.
  • Von Willebrands Disease: This is the most common inherited bleeding disorder of dogs. With this disease, proper blood clotting is impossible due to the deficiency of a protein that the platelets need.
  • Perianal Fistula: This skin disease also known as anal furunculosis is a serious medical condition that most commonly affects German Shepherd dogs both purebred and mixed breed dogs. It is a skin disease that affects the area immediately surrounding the anus.
  • Hypothyroidism: This is an endocrine disease that affects the dogs metabolic functions which often result in obesity and canine diabetes.
  • Eye Issues: Giant German Shepherds are also susceptible to different eye problems which include irritation, inflammation, watery eye, and pus discharge among others.

Brushing And Grooming Routine

Only use gentle, safe brushes on your German Shepherd at this young of an age. The best introduction to grooming is the brush glove.

Your puppy will love this gentle and easy brushing glove and youll still use the glove as they get older.

I still use the brushing gloves on my old GSD thats how much she loves them!

A good puppy brushing schedule looks like this:

  • Use the glove brush for a few minutes a day to expose your dog to how grooming feels.
  • Softly touch all parts of their body with your hands and the glove mitt brush to expose them to gentle touch.
  • Take at least 5 minutes three times a week for their early grooming and brushing routine.
  • Praise them for good behavior and offer tasty treats to keep them near you for grooming.
  • Brushing is a wonderful time to bond quietly with your new dog!

Why Top German Lines Make Such A Difference

The West German lines from Germany are tested for years to insure they are qualified for breeding. Germany will not breed two dogs together just because they are purebred. It takes much more then that to get a German shepherd papered in Germany. To receive a World Sieger Champion VA/V title takes years of continued work to achieve. This gives them an advantage over the standard American German Shepherd dog you see today. The West German bloodlines are bred for great attitudes and superb temperament making them extraordinary in show, search and rescue, service dogs, protection and most all the ultimate family dog.

Most people do not understand the big difference in German shepherds and why it so important to know exactly what you are looking for when choosing your next family member. As with any breeder, check the certificates for proof of OFA or Penn-Hip. If it is not there on the websight, they may not actually OFA!Look for pedigrees, because hiding a pedigree is a often a clear sign of dishonesty! I have been fooled OVER and OVER, even by people I thought I knew well… just because it says they OFA or Penn-hip on the websight does not mean they do.. I would say as many as 30% who say they OFA actually do not. Always ask to see the certificate& pedigree or get the number! Why buy from a breeder who starts with a lie?

Other Ways To Indicate Adult Size And Weight

A straightforward way to predict how big your German Shepherd will be is to double his size once he has hit the 16-week mark. Of course, your German Shepherd could be a bit larger than that actual calculation, seeing how many of them continue growing at a slower rate between 18 months and sometimes up to 2 years old.

Here are a few tips and tricks for guessing how big your German Shepherd puppy will end up as an adult:

  • Look at the mom and dad. If your German Shepherd puppys parents were both large, then you can feel confident that your pup will follow suit. Even then, the puppy may end up with smaller-sized paws. Paws should not be the only thing to look at as an indicator of height and weight.
  • Look at the skin and how loose it is. Generally, a puppy that has a lot of excess loose skin will have more room to grow. So, if your German Shepherd is a bit on the saggy side, it simply means he will be able to grow into his skin. Lots of loose skin can certainly mean you will have a larger German Shepherd.
  • Use a calculator. Yes, its true puppy calculators are available online to help you guess how big your puppy is going to be. They will ask a few simple questions, such as type of breed, how old they are, and how much they weighed at birth.

So, are any of these methods accurate? You will need to go to the final paragraph to find the answer!

Provide An Appropriate Whole And Complete Large Breed Puppy Diet

Your dogs veterinarian will be a key partner for you to ensure your growing puppy is taking in the right amount of essential nutrients, vitamins, trace minerals, and calories.

In most cases, you will be guided to feed a puppy food formulated specifically for large breed puppies that will grow up more slowly over a longer period.

However, if you are feeding a raw diet or making your homemade dog food, you will need to work even more closely with your dogs veterinarian to ensure your puppy gets the right supplements to feed its growing body.

Just as feeding the wrong food can cause your puppy to grow up too fast, so too can feeding the wrong food stunt growth and cause problems and pain throughout your German Shepherds life.

History And Origin: Why Breed Giant German Shepherds

As mentioned earlier in the article, both King Shepherd and Shiloh Shepherd are new hybrids of dogs that are still under development. The Shiloh was born in 1970 decades earlier than the birth of its son, the King Shepherd, 1990.

A few of the reasons why breeders produce large German Shepherd breeds include better health, better appearance, better behavior, and stronger body.

In the case of Shiloh Shepherd, it was originally bred to produce a German Shepherd that is gentler and bigger. Trainers of German Shepherds back then believed that they are too much for the average family to handle.

So, they decided and aimed to produce a dog breed that has the instinctive protective trait but is more calm and gentle the result, Shiloh Shepherd!

With the latest development of the Shiloh Shepherd breed, it is said that the Shiloh excels in all types of work, from animal assisted therapy to obedience to guardian assignments, while getting along very well with people.

The King Shepherd, on the other hand, was also aimed to be a larger guard dog that can be a family companion.

Since it has the foundation of the Shiloh Shepherd and the German Shepherd, King Shepherd inherited both the gentle and protective traits of its ancestor.

More than the temperament, the breeding of King Shepherd also aimed to refine the health of the breed by crossbreeding it with other breeds that have better health history especially hip dysplasia.

Why Is The Black German Shepherd Colored So Differently

As explained earlier, a genetic mutation is responsible for the unique appearance and physical differences that manifest in the pure Black German Shepherd.

This isnt a terribly unusual phenomenon most breeds that occur in multiple color variations do so because of genetic mutations.

In the case of solid Black German Shepherds, the mutation is the result of a recessive gene. To explain this more clearly, well need to back up for a moment and review basic Mendelian genetics.

Dogs receive two copies of every gene in their cells one comes from their mother, and the other comes from their father.

Genes are normally either dominant or recessive, and this determines how they are expressed .

Note that genes can also be incompletely dominant or co-dominant, and some traits are controlled by a collection of genes. However, well ignore these types of genes and traits for now.

Dominant genes are expressed whenever they are present. For example, the gene associated with the sable color pattern in German Shepherds is dominant.

That means that if a dog has the sable gene, he will appear sable, no matter what the other gene is.

Recessive genes, by contrast, are only expressed when they occur in pairs. Pure Black German Shepherd dogs are the result of a recessive gene, which means that whenever you see one, you are looking at an animal with two copies of the recessive gene.

Accordingly, Black German Shepherds may pop up in litters produced by normal-looking parents.
