When an American family is considering getting a dog, the beagle is always included as an option. Beagles rank as the fifth most favorite and popular breed in the United States, and who can blame these families who want their very own Snoopy in their home?

Aside from a furball of sunshine and energy that you will get from your beagle, you also gain a reliable watchdog for yourself and the rest of your family. Beagles are good and can even be excellent watchdogs with a little training.

If you are still having second thoughts, here are some reasons why beagles make good watchdogs.

Beagles Love You

In general, beagles love humans. They love being around you and being involved in your human activities. They love the attention that kids give them, and they live for endless hours of playtime. These traits make them perfect watch dogs because, stranger or not, they consistently show excitement when a human is approaching or near them.

Beagles Are Loyal To You

When your beagle sees you as the alpha of your pack, you will earn its obedience. Most importantly, you will earn your dogs loyalty to you. The mere gesture of you giving it food and shelter is enough for it to be devoted to you. For your beagle, even if you are the alpha, you are part of his pack, and loyalty is innate in a pack.

This would explain why beagles, and even other breeds, would often put their lives at risk to protect you and the rest of the family their pack instincts necessitate this from them.

Why Read Breed Profiles

Dog breed profiles help everyone, whether you have a mixed breed or purebred dog, to better understand and improve the quality of your dogs life. If you have a mixed breed dog, read up on all of the breed profiles that make up your dog. Not sure what breed your dog is? There are a number of easy DNA tests out there to help your find out.

When Do German Shepherds Learn To Protect Their Owners

German Shepherds, and dogs in general, usually protect what they deem theirs. What they believe is their own property.

Your dog will take action only when he sees you as his human, and your home as his.

This is the case across all mammals. Animals, including humans, protect what they deem their own property.

If the dog is new to the house, or still a puppy, then you should give him some time to feel home.

    Akita Vs German Shepherd History

Akitas date back to the 1600s and are named after the Akita a province in northern Japan. The breed was originally used to guard Japanese royalty and to hunt large fowl and game, including bears!

Akitas first made their way Stateside when the famous political activist and author Helen Keller visited Japan and, after expressing interest in the Akita breed, was gifted a puppy to take back to the US. Akitas came to the UK via Canada in 1937 but werent internationally known until the early 1980s. The UK and US bred Akita is larger and more robust than the Japanese Akita Inu, which is sometimes mistaken for the Shiba Inu.

German Shepherds are a generally more well-known type of dog than Akitas. In the UK, theyre almost immediately recognised as police dogs, chosen for their trainability, size and tracking abilities. They are a fairly young breed though, originating in Germany in 1899. Captain Max von Stephanitz, retired from the German cavalry, started breeding German Shepherd dogs to herd sheep. As Germany became more industrialised, von Stephanitz saw the need for herding dogs was diminishing so he convinced the German government to use the breed for police work and military service.

During WWI, the breed served as a Red Cross dog. After the war, an American soldier took a puppy back to Los Angeles where the dog later became Rin Tin Tin, starring in over 26 Hollywood films which made the breed famous.

Common Personality Traits Of German Shepherds

If someone asked you to name the most loyal dog breed, theres no question German Shepherds come to mind. Families with German Shepherds often tout their supportive attitudes, making them one of the most fun dog breeds.

Theyre also intelligent and easy-to-train. Alongside their loyalty, these traits make them exceptional all-around service dogs.

You can train a German Shepherd for nearly anything with enough persistence, these dogs can learn impressive tricks, including protective behaviors.

German shepherds are naturally alert. Unfamiliar noises will wake them up immediately, and GSDs will be naturally suspicious around unfamiliar people.

If youre looking for a dog breed that will wake up in the middle of the night to ward off intruders, or bark at trespassers on your property, the German Shepherd could be the right breed for you.

Its important to realize these traits come with one big characteristic you need to consider: German Shepherds need a lot of physical activity to manage their naturally-alert states.

Unlike an English Bulldog who enjoys sleeping on the couch most of the day, a German Shepherd wants to walk, run, and play as much as he or she can.

Above all, German Shepherds are eager to please their owners. If you can find a way to communicate what you want, they will oblige.

German Shepherd: One Of The Best Guard Dog Breeds

Are working line German Shepherd Good for First time dog owners????

Believe it or not, the German Shepherd is one of the best guard dog breeds around. These dogs are loyal, smart, and have a solid sense of their home territory.

They’re also relatively easy to train and menacing in appearance. If you’ve ever seen an angry German Shepherd, you’ll know that they look like terrifying large guard dogs. Indeed, when it comes to smaller animals, they’ll have no problem scaring them off. Even bigger animals and humans will get spooked, seeing a 70-80lb+ dog growling at them.

Honestly, it’s hard to beat a German Shepherd for this task. They’re one of the best protection dogs around .

    How Sociable Are German Shepherds

    Are they friendly with strangers?

Most German Shepherds are reserved with strangers. As the breed’s national club says, a good German Shepherd has:

“a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them.”

As you might imagine, this can be a fine line to walk. Without proper guidance from the owner, a German Shepherd’s natural aloofness can morph over the line to suspiciousness, distrust, and even aggression or fearfulness.

When you own an aloof breed, you need to socialize the dog thoroughly. This means a careful program of teaching him to pay attention to you and mind you in the presence of other people and other dogs. He doesn’t have to like them, but he must accept them.

One thing I should mention: many German Shepherds who bark and lunge at strangers or other dogs aren’t being either protective or aggressive. Rather, this kind of reactivity can be the dog’s attempt to hide his own insecurities behind a blustering facade.

There are also legal liabilities to consider when you acquire a German Shepherd. For example, your homeowner insurance policy might be cancelled or the rates hiked, because people are often quicker to sue if a “guard dog breed” does anything even remotely questionable.

Abuse and similarly awful experiences can make dogs become wary of humans or certain situations. Depending on what theyve gone through, they might lash out and display some unfriendly behaviors when they feel scared.

Some German Shepherds can even become aggressive because of these experiences. GSDs who have been through bad experiences arent always hopeless, many times they can be trained to become well-mannered companions, but they will require the leadership of an experienced handler and tons of patience.
