German Shepherds have a medium-length, double coat consisting of a dense, harsh and close-lying outer coat with a softer undercoat. The amount of time that it takes to fully train a police dog will depend on how the dog is going to be used on the force. More often than not, when the police department receives a dog, it has already been trained to some level when it comes to protection and obedience. From this point on, the dog will go on to train with its handler for specific application, and the length of this training will depend on the application that the dog is being trained for.
Initial parole training will take several weeks, and after this, more specialized training will take place. An example of such training could include explosive detection, and this type of training can take anywhere between 3 and 4 weeks. After the foundation level of training, both the dogs and the handlers will be required to maintain a schedule of ongoing training to ensure that the dogs skills are kept sharp.
There are lots of other different types of training, and these will all take different lengths of time. However, one thing that we can say for sure is that police dog training will require an ongoing commitment from both the dog and its handler.
How Much Exercise Do German Shepherds Need
German Shepherd puppies and adolescents should have moderate exercise only multiple walks, fetch games, or playing with another dog.
But the growing bones and ligaments in a young dog can be irreparably damaged by too much exercise or the wrong kind of exercise. At this age, there should be no forced running . Restrict jumping as much as possible.
Once the dog is mature, the amount of exercise needed will vary according to the dog’s energy level. But all German Shepherds, to maintain fitness, need brisk walking every day and all-out running in a safe, enclosed area as often as possible.
Dogs from working lines typically want a lot more exercise.
Mental exercise is even more important for German Shepherds. Mental exercise means the dog gets to participate in interesting activities that keep his intelligent mind stimulated.
This might be a dog sport such as agility, rally obedience, musical freestyle, tracking, flyball, herding, or schutzhund. It might be interactive dog toys, or a homemade obstacle course, or learning tricks, or playing games such as Hide ‘n Seek.

History Of How German Shepherds Became Working/ Police Dogs
The German shepherd is a new dog breed with its history starting in the 1890s. As you know, this dog is a native German dog breed, and its ancestors used to herd sheep.
One German captain, Max von Stephanitz, was not satisfied with these dogs qualities and working drive during those days.
In 1899, he attended a dog show and spotted one dog that had close behaviors and attributed that he desired to have. He bought this dog known as Hektor Linksrhein.
