New Research Reveals Secrets Of The Demographics And Disorders In German Shepherd Dogs

A new study conducted by the VetCompass Programme at the Royal Veterinary College has revealed novel insights into the demographics and disorders of German Shepherd Dogs. This information will raise awareness of the susceptibility of German Shepherd Dogs to a variety of health conditions, inform diagnosis and treatment, and will help potential owners to decide between a male or female puppy.

German Shepherd Dogs are one of the UKs most popular dog breeds, and have been widely used for herding, guarding, police, military and guide-dog roles. However, over recent decades, the physical shape of the German Shepherd Dog has become more extreme and there is now much debate about consequential impact on the health of the breed. This VetCompass study adds to current knowledge by providing key data from hundreds of UK vet practices about the health and demographics of this breed.

This new research revealed:

  • German Shepherd Dogs are falling out of favour in the UK, dropping from 3.5% of all dogs born in 2005 to 2.2% in 2013.
  • 63.43% of German Shepherds had at least one disorder recorded during 2013, which is similar to other breeds previously explored, including Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pugs.
  • The average lifespan of German Shepherds overall was 10.3 years which is similar to other breeds of this bodysize.
  • The most common disorders recorded in German Shepherds were ear infection , osteoarthritis , diarrhoea , overweight/obesity and aggression .

What Traits Influence A Breeds Longevity

The German Shepherd Breed History.

So what is it about long-living breeds that allow for their outstanding health? According to science, several factors are likely to contribute.

It is true that smaller dogs usually live longer than large dogs. You can count on most small breeds of dog to live into their teens, with many living into mid-to-late teens. This is usually attributed to heart health, as large breeds hearts must work harder to circulate blood.

However, medium-small dogs such as Collies seem to have the longest maximum lifespan. The two oldest living dogs, according to Guinness World Records, were 24 and 29. Both were Australian cattle dogs.

Additionally, two out of three of the dogs with the highest median lifespan are Collies. These types of breeds have one major thing in common that likely contributes to their longevity: hardy breeding practices.

These breeds of mid-sized, lightweight herders and workers were bred to be smart, healthy and athletic. Their lineages were not bred for cuteness or other physical characteristics that are perceived as desirable but often result in health complications, such as snub noses and sloped backs.

Smaller mid-sized dogs also have less broad chest cavities which limits the risk of exercise-induced collapse and the collection of air between the outside of the lungs and chest wall known as pneumothorax.

So, the major contributing factors to a breeds longevity seem to be size, for circulation and heart-health, and breeding practices that avoid genetic disease.

Shiloh Shepherd: Are They Giant German Shepherds

Photo from

The other breed of Giant German Shepherds is called Shiloh Shepherds. This Giant German Shepherd breed came earlier than the King Shepherd. In fact, Shiloh Shepherds are the foundation of King Shepherds!

This GSD variety came into existence in 1970 as a way of improving the German Shepherd breed due to their numerous health issues, temperament problems, and trainability concerns.

German Shepherds back then were considered as too much for average families to handle.

This being said, Tina Barber, a German Shepherd trainer, had seen the need to breed a better version of the German Shepherd that can perfectly fit into a family as a working dog. This is how the birth of the gentle Shiloh Shepherd started.

Shiloh Shepherds are a mix of German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute, and few other dog breeds that are larger in size and have better genetics when it comes to health.

As hip dysplasia is a common crippling disease for German Shepherds, breeds with better hip conditions were crossbred to produce the Shiloh Shepherd.

It is said that Shilohs perfectly resemble the intelligence and loyalty of German Shepherds but are less aggressive and domineering. They are even called gentle giants because of their stable temperament.

What Is The Difference Between A Long Haired And Short Haired German Shepherd

The primary difference between a short-haired GSD and a long-haired GSD is obviously the coat. But the difference in fur covering is much more complex than merely one dog having shorter hair than the other. In a way, its the engine that drives public perception of the breed. These hairs are soft and silky.

All The Same There Are Some Characteristics That You Should Keep In Mind As You Look For These Types Of Mixes

The biggest German shepherd Husky mix puppies that you find will most likely be those who are full-breed. That means that not only did the mother have several litters to nurse, but she also had to raise the pups in her system from a very early age. Because of this, when the pups reach about ten months old, they are usually too big and heavy for their mother to handle. As a result, she may have to euthanize them to be able to keep them in the best health possible.

In most cases, the bigger the litter, the more pups you are going to get. It just makes sense to buy a litter of larger German shepherds to increase your chances of finding a designer German mix puppy that is the biggest. In addition to that, because the pups are so big at this point in their development stage, breeding them to a smaller GERD-resistant dog breed would make it much easier for them to thrive in a larger group.

As long as you know what qualities to look for and keep in mind when you are looking for the biggest German shepherd available, you will be able to find a great dog for yourself or to pass down to a young German shepherd in your family.

Five Different Types Of German Shepherds

This is the biggest German Shepherd I Ever worked on

Five different types of German Shepherds? But I thought there was only one!

If this question popped into your mind once in your life, youre not alone! I didnt know there were variations to the German Shepherd Dog breed until I started looking for one to adopt. Heres what I discovered:

1. American Show Line

If you think of German Shepherd, youre probably picturing an American Show Line GSD in your mind. They are what GSDs are modeled after the typical black and light tan color and the infamous back slope. They are the biggest and longest among the German Shepherd lines and are generally more laid back and have lower energy levels, but they make excellent family pets and show dogs.

2. West German Show Line

Western German Show Line GSDs are known for being the most handsome among the five. Even though they are bred for their beauty, they are also hard-working service dogs. Its a strict rule that each dog coming from this line must have a working title and be in service. They have more energy and are not lazy. They need tons of exercise and socialization compared to their American cousins.

3. West German Working Line

4. East German DDR Working Line

5. Czech Working Line

Is It True That Dogs Age Seven Years For Every Human Year

No. Erika Mansourian, a writer for the American Kennel Club website, says that this belief dates back to the 1950s. She says it may have stemmed from an observation that dogs lived to be 10 years old, while humans lived to be 70 on average.

It is true that dogs age much faster than humans, but the extent and speed of this process depends on many factors.

The AKC notes that a dogs aging process depends on its size. Larger dogs tend to age faster and have shorter life expectancies than do smaller dogs.

The AKC divides dogs into four size categories:

  • Small
  • Medium
  • Large
  • Giant

An adult male German Shepherd usually weighs between 66 and 88 pounds, and an adult female generally weighs between 49 and 73 pounds. German Shepherds thus fall into the Large category.

Large dogs actually age 24 years during their first two years! Then, until they reach the age of five, they age four years for every year.

Large dogs that are over five years old then generally age five or six years for every year, and a German Shepherd that lives to be 14 is comparable to a human of 88.

How Can You Tell Whether A Giant German Shepherd Is Simply Big Boned Or Heavy Boned Or Whether It Is Just Overweight

Youd want to get a professional opinion, but as somewhere to start, you might look at the BCS (body condition score of the dog.

This doesnt just take into account total weight, as bones and muscle might make up a large majority of a dogs weight over say fat.

A BCS of 5 out of 9 is said to be ideal and might mean the following things:

You should be able to feel the ribs without digging,

The dog should have a visible a waist,

There should be a dip under the lumbar muscles,

And, there should be a rounded back

German Shepherds Are One Of The Smartest Dog Breeds

Its not a coincidence that German Shepherds are one of the top obedience competitors. They are considered the third most intelligent dog breed after the Border Collie and the Poodle. A study by canine psychologist Dr Stanley Coren showed that German Shepherds can learn a new behaviour in under five repetitions and will obey a first command 95% of the time. This makes them great to train as it wont take long to teach this dog new tricks! A classic German Shepherd fact.

Drawbacks Of Their Size

The Great Dane

If you arent looking for a large dog made to work, this dog may not be the one for you. For example, if you live in an apartment and a big dog just isnt logical, then a shepherd might not be the best fit for you.

But, you love their look and personality and you feel the German Shepherd is your perfect soulmate then theres good news! There are GS breed mixes that come in different sizes and still have the charm of full sized shepherds.

Where Can I Find Giant German Shepherd Puppies For Sale Good Breeders Or Even Adopt

When it comes to getting a Giant German Shepherd, you can either buy from a breeder or adopt from a rescue or shelter.

Despite the myth, most dogs from shelters are not broken or aggressive.

Many are probably the opposite they are just looking for someone to give their love to.

Thousands of dogs die in shelters and rescues every day if you are looking for a Giant GSD, strongly consider them first.

In terms of breeders, youll want to find a breeder that cares more about the dogs than the financial reward of breeding.

Here are some very helpful guides on considerations for breeders and rescues/shelters, and where to find good breeders and shelters/rescues:

While looking around on the net, we had a scan over several breeders that say they offer Giant German Shepherds.

We are not suggesting you go to any one particular breeder, you ultimately have to do your own research and due diligence and make up your own mind.

But, one breeder that stood out as caring about their dogs to us was Royal Air German Shepherd.

They appear to be experienced, care about the health of their dogs, care about you as an owner offering health and temperament guarantees for the dogs, and also express that size of their dogs is secondary to health and well being.

They are also very transparent with what they offer and photos of their dogs.

Panda German Shepherd Dog

Another of our types of German Shepherd which is not very common is the Panda German Shepherd. They have a curious and striking appearance which is often confused with other dog breeds. Due to a genetic mutation, but they are a full German Shepherd and are not a mixed breed. The mutation occurred in a litter from the USA. This type of German Shepherd exhibits a white coat on the abdomen and legs, but has black or tan on other parts, giving them a sort of panda like appearance.

Like other German Shepherd Dogs, they are agile, strong and ideal family pets. However, they arouse controversy over some breeders as white markings are considered a fault. The main controversy appears to be the belief that the dog is from inferior stock, but so far their health seems to be average when compared to other types of GSD.
