Dogs Rescued From Horrendous Conditions At Dilapidated Nj Mansion Group Says
Sixteen German shepherds and three Dobermans were rescued this week from horrendous conditions in the basement of a run-down Paterson mansion that was apparently being used as a puppy mill, an animal welfare group said Wednesday.
Paterson animal control officers found the dogs malnourished and kept in cages by a squatter who was staying at the property, according to the Oakland-based Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge Inc. , which said the dogs were varying ages and some needed medical care.
Feces covered the entire house, even the walls, and spots on the floor inside the cages show evidence of dogs digging to escape. The dogs are a range of ages, from young adults to seniors, the organization said.
RBARI and Second Chance Pet Adoption League in Oak Ridge were working to find homes for the dogs.
It was unclear if any charges were filed against the squatter, who the group said left with at least one puppy. Officers found the animals at what is known as the Barbour Mansion on 39th Street in Paterson, according to a report from New Jersey 101.5.
Just a day ago, these 19 dogs were living in filth and squalor with the sole purpose of breeding. Today, they have a new lease on life, with thanks to rescue, the group said.
Officials were conducting DNA tests to find out if the dogs were linked to other German Shepherds rescued over the past year in New Jersey and New York.
The dogs would likely be available for adoption after examinations.
