Origin Of The German Shepherd Breed

In Europe during the 1850s, attempts were being made to standardise breeds. The dogs were bred to preserve traits that assisted in their job of herding sheep and protecting flocks from predators. In Germany this was practiced within local communities, where shepherds selected and bred dogs that they believed had the skills necessary for herding sheep, such as intelligence, speed, strength, and keen senses of smell. The results were dogs that were able to do such things, but that differed significantly, both in appearance and ability, from one locality to another.

To combat these differences, the Phylax Society was formed in 1891 with the intention of creating standardised dog breeds in Germany. The society disbanded after only three years due to ongoing internal conflicts regarding the traits in dogs that the society should promote some members believed dogs should be bred solely for working purposes, while others believed dogs should be bred also for appearance. While unsuccessful in their goal, the Phylax Society had inspired people to pursue standardising dog breeds independently.

Max von Stephanitz, an ex-cavalry captain and former student of the Berlin Veterinary College, was one such ex-member. He believed strongly that dogs should be bred for working.

West German Show Line GSDs are a happy medium between working line GSDs and North American Show Line GSDs. They tend to be of larger structure , than working line GSDs and generally carry the well-known black and red colouration. They tend to be slightly lower in drive than working line German Shepherds, however even a low drive West German show line GSD still possesses more working ability and drive than the average family pet. While Western German Show Line breeders have historically bred their dogs to win in the show ring, the German Shepherd Club of Germany nevertheless requires that all German Shepherds meet strict standards for nerve and temperament before being bred and, as such, even West German show lines have retained a high degree of fidelity to the original breed standard.

The History Of The American Show Line German Shepherd

Did you know that the German Shepherd is one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world today? In the U.S, its also the second most popular American Kennel Club-registered dog breed.

It has long origins in history, too. Originating from Germany in 1899, it was bred to help shepherds keep their sheep safe and to herd them.

You may still see German Shepherds referred to as Alsatians. This is a nod to the German-French border area, Alsace-Lorraine. They acquired the name in the World Wars to distance the breed from its country of origin, but breeders campaigned in 1977 to have it switched back to the original and, more accurate, name.

The Working Line German Shepherd Dog

The working line is a stronger German Shepherd type, which loves and enjoys hard work. They can basically work all day, without getting too much tired.

The owners of working line German Shepherd dogs usually work with their dogs every day, for at least 2-4 hours. They are highly driven energy dogs, and you need to invest a lot of time, and money, in that German Shepherd type.

If you want a German Shepherd dog, and you will be for the first time German Shepherd owner, we highly recommend you to skip this German Shepherd type, and buy show line.

If you dont invest a in your working line GSD, and he doesnt have proper treatment, their behavior can become destructive, and trust us, you dont want to be in that position.

Besides that, the working line German Shepherd is a healthier type of German Shepherds, which is less prone to diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia.

How Much Exercise Does A Show Line German Shepherd Need

Show line GSDs are bred for showing purposes or companionship, but that does not mean that they dont need exercise.

The German Shepherd breed has high energy levels and needs substantial mental and physical stimulation regardless of the subset. Although less than a working line, a show line GSD requires daily movement to keep his limbs and bones in check.

A minimum of two hours of exercise is advisable for show line German Shepherds. This time can include walks, engaging exercise, or even extra playtime and training sessions. Exercise time also depends upon the age, health, and size of your dog, e.g., a growing puppy needs less exercise.

Since this is a case-to-case scenario, you should pay attention to signs of enthusiasm as well as exhaustion in your dog. Moreover, you should be present and fully engaged when getting your best friend to exercise. This can help develop a stronger bond with your dog as well.

How Protective Are American Show Line German Shepherds

Golden Ridge Farm German Shepherds

Protective instincts are built into this breed, regardless of the line they stem from. However, due to the calmer and friendlier nature of the show line dogs, they actually make a better protective family pet than the working line, which can be very intolerant and intense.

An American Show Line German Shepherd will still need mental stimulation and training to thrive, and poor socialization can lead to issues with fear-based aggression. Socialization and training are also crucial for good manners. They can be very fulfilling to train because of their quick wits and eagerness to please.

As the name suggests, working line German Shepherds are bred because of their functionality. Some of the most common places that have a German Shepherd include military and law enforcement agencies, forensics and rescue teams.

These have straight, thick bodies which aid them in their work. They are the more aggressive of the two and are known to use their mouth to attack.

The show line breed is more of a showy variety and is primarily concerned with how the dogs look. They are considered to make better house pets.

The show line German Shepherd has a leaner appearance and comes in richer colors such as tan, gray, black and red.

Working Line Vs Show Line German Shepherd

Even if this is the same dog breed there is some difference between these types in their behavior, health, and power.

German Shepherd, as a dog breed, was developed to work, to be a herding dog, with an extremely high level of loyalty. By the time, they prove their power and loyalty and easily become military dogs in World War I and World War II.

After the war ended, and after the dogs were replaced by robot guards, the German Shepherd dog started working as a police dog or service dog.

These arent the only two jobs that this dog breed has. Many people start organizing sports events for dog dogs, like Schutzhund Championships, tracking competitions, agility competitions, dog shop championships, etc.

Each German Shepherd type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Can A Show Line German Shepherd Be A Guard Dog

American show line VS West German show line GSD./DogzPlanet

German Shepherds usually take to being guard dogs since they were developed for this very purpose and had a history in this domain. Although the show line GSDs available today were developed by meticulous breeders who kept the structure and appearance of the dog in view, they can still be good guard dogs.

They would need substantial training to become good protection dogs, but that is not a problem since they are easily trainable and highly intelligent. Along with possessing certain show-worthy traits, show-line GSDs also possess enough drive to work and protect.

They usually have strong protective instincts and are innately quite protective of their owners. All show line GSDs may not resort to violence upon encountering an intruder, which varies by training and temperament. That said, a show line would do everything he can to protect his owner.

The most noticeable distinction between a German-bred Shepherd and an American Shepherd is the dog’s posture. The American German Shepherd’s back has a downward slope and severely slanted hip joints, whereas German Shepherds of German lines have a straight back.

These characteristics give the American dog a longer appearance and allow for the “flowing gait” that is highly recommended in the show ring in the United States. They also differ in color and size, with German Shepherds being larger and darker than American Shepherds.

Bloating, hip dysplasia , and allergies are among the health issues that American German Shepherds face.

Due to their straighter and more balanced stance, German show lines are less likely to develop hip problems. They can also withstand more pain. They are more stable and healthier as a result of their standardized breeding and intensive training regimens.

The West European Show Line

European Showline Shepherds are shorter and stockier than their American counterparts. They also have more masculine heads and richer coloring. “Red and black” is the most common coloring. Black, sable, and others are allowed in the standard, but not white.

Contrary to American lines, the European Shepherd has a stronger emphasis on temperament and ability when it comes to showing and breeding. The goal of the SV is “To create a very high level of serviceability.” Thus, there are high standards and regulations regarding health, conformation, and temperament in Europe that a German Shepherd must meet in order to be allowed to breed. Those three categories all work together in contributing toward a dog’s “serviceability” each is thus of equal importance and a dog is inhibited if lacking in any.

Because of these high standards, the average European Showline shepherd is superior to the average American Showline shepherd in all regards. To learn about what a European Showline Shepherd’s temperament is like, go to our FAQ HERE and read our answer to the question, “What is the temperament of your European German Shepherd dogs?”
