My name is Michelle Brooks. I have had dogs all my life and German Shepherds most of that time. I have tried different breeds, but always come back to what I know and love. The German Shepherd Dog is the right fit for me. I breed large, old-fashioned, straight-backed, German Shepherds with a special focus on health and temperament.
I am a very small breeder, all my dogs live with me, in the house. They are first, and foremost, my beloved pets. In my litters, I concentrate on the things that matter most to me: Health and Temperament.
My dogs are all larger than the breed standard but with no compromise to their health. All my dogs are OFAd/Penn Hipped and DM tested . All my dogs are medium to low energy, making them easy to train and ideally suited for families. I do not breed: dogs that are hyper, dogs that show any signs of aggression, working dogs, high drive dogs, or dogs with excessive angulation.
Puppies are born and raised in my home! That means your puppy goes home with you already socialized with other dogs, with cats, and familiar with all the sights and sounds of a normal home. All puppies are also current on vaccinations and on a set deworming schedule.

If youre wanting a working dog for police work, Schutzhund, security, or personal protection, youll definitely need to purchase from a working line. Why Do German Shepherds Backs Slope
GSD has evolved through the years which has resulted in many different bloodlines. From the original working line came the show line barely a few decades after the introduction of GSDs to the world.
Unfortunately, some influential breeders concentrated on the physical perfection of the GSDs. Their idea of a perfect GSD is a sloped back with bouncy movements and looked like floating in show rings. This resulted in sloping back and angulated hind legs.
According to some breeders and some GSD clubs, having sloped backs and angulated hind legs will give GSDs more force in their gait, allowing them to function better than straight backs. But some breeders went from sloped to extremely sloped backs which is way beyond the conformity of the show lines.

Is The Straight Back German Shepherd Better
The German Shepherd with the straight back is definitely superior to the sloped back type. Why? Its easy.
Health benefits.
German Shepherds were bred with straight backs to be active, agile, and healthy helpers on farms and for various other activities.
What they needed was a robust dog breed that didnt come with lots of health issues.
Sadly, this changed when the new version was introduced because the sloped back German Shepherd is much more prone to joint issues, hip dysplasia, and many more health issues related to the unnatural back.
Adding to that, Max von Stephanitz who was the grandfather of the breed heavily advocated for the straight back when he created the breed.
Hes not the only one though.
Animal rescues, dog breed experts, and vets around the world prefer the straight back for just these health reasons and to avoid getting sucked into thinking that its okay to breed some type of dog with poor health just because we like the looks.

American Vs European: One
Disclaimer: Before reading, the following note that we are providing only anecdotal evidence that we have witnessed with our eyes. In addition, nobody at Keystone German Shepherd Dog & Kennels believes that all imports have bad temperaments far from it we find that many better-bred imports have solid temperaments.
We at Keystone German Shepherd Dogs & Kennels provide kenneling for all breed of dogs as well as obedience and conformation training. Throughout the years, we have observed that the biggest cowards and least trainable dogs consistently are the so-called import German shepherd dogs. For example, when the owner brings their import out for boarding, the import will have its hackle up and be extremely aggressive towards staff, even to the point of snapping at our staff. This aggression is unfounded, and these shepherds are potential liabilities for their owners. However, after the owner leaves, these same dogs become cowards. They consistently refuse to socialize with other dogs or staff and coward in the corners of their kennels. This type of temperament would not protect their owners if a real threat materialized. For example, while these dogs are being aggressive towards staff, a quick step towards them would send them cowering behind their owners. This is not the correct German shepherd temperament.
The European or import shepherd purposely is bred to be high-strung and restless.
Old German Shepherd Dog Vs German Shepherd
The Old German Shepherd has never been bred to look a certain way, and so there is no true breed standard in existence. A medium to large sized athletically-built breed, dogs will measure between 26 and 32 inches, while weighing anything between 22 and 40kg. Their coat colour can be black, brown, tan or grey, and often consists of more than one colour. The length and type of the coat varies between individuals, though tends to be long.
The German Shepherd has a double coat, which is comprised of a thick undercoat and a dense, slightly wavy, or straight outer coat. Its hair, usually tan and black, or red and black in color, is medium in length and is shed all year round. Other rarer color variations include all-Black, all-White, liver, and blue.
The German Shepherds body is long generally between 22 and 26 inches in proportion to its height. This gives the dog strength, agility, elasticity, and long, elegant strides.

Where Can I Get A Straight Back German Shepherd Puppy
If youd like to opt for the old school German Shepherd back with your next puppy, then a reputable breeder is your best bet.
Although in many regions the sloped back is widespread, it shouldnt be too hard to find breeders that want to stay true to the original dog breed.
If youre asking any potential breeder these recommend breeder questions, most irresponsible breeders will be eliminated anyway.
For American buyers, it might be harder since the trend in AKC show lines strongly leans towards the sloping back.
German working lines are not free from that problem though.
Time and time again, I witness responsible breeders that turn their back on the German Shepherd breed due to the community that steers it in the wrong direction.
Even if youre not looking for a true working dog, theyve been bred that way for a reason. Performing a job.
A healthy and active furry companion will have a far higher quality of life when compared with the one thats been bred to garner champion titles.
That being said, I find the sentiment that the sloped back looks superior questionable. In my personal opinion, a weird stance and gait are not at all desirable.
Long Haired Straight Back German Shepherd
