West German Show Line German Shepherd

West German show line German Shepherd puppy meets working line and American show line Shepherds!

West German Show Line GSDs have a significantly higher temperature hue than their American counterparts. They have black and red fur, with the red bordering on deep tan. There are hints of light brown between the reds and blacks in the dogs coat, and they predominantly display the saddleback pattern.

They are considered the most beautiful of all the German Shepherd types. The West German Show Line also has an angulated topline however, it is nowhere as severe as the American Show Line. Id describe them as having a slightly arched lower back.

My German Shepherd Willow is a West German Show Line however, we dont show her. We chose her for a mix of temperament, color, and looks.

These dogs, too, grow up to 26 inches as males and 24 inches as females with a 2-inch buffer for the lower-end. When you see at least a 24-inch adult male GSD with prominent red and black areas and a slightly sloping back, you can classify him as a West German Show Line German Shepherd. A similar diagnosis applies to a 22-inch female adult.

Tip! Remember to keep the breed maximum in mind when getting a dog crate or accommodating his space in your home. Check out this article, 8 Best Dog Crates for German Shepherds .

However, when you buy the dog, youll get him as a puppy with little to no information about how much he will grow. Thats why its always a good idea to see the sire and dam beforehand, as this can help give you an indication of size and quality. Talking to a reputable breeder helps.

Character Of The Show Line German Shepherd

Show line German Shepherds exhibit excellent temperaments and are very calm they are much more easygoing than other German Shepherd types. Show lines are loving dogs that bond quickly with their owners.

However, they are usually aloof with strangers and do not bond in passing. Since their past lies in herding sheep, they are highly protective of their family members and get along well with children and other dogs.

A show line German Shepherds temperament can be affected by external factors and is prone to change. Since they have high energy, they need quite a lot of mental and physical stimulation to drain their energy levels to avoid destructive behavior.

There would be a definite change in the temperament of a dog who does not exercise enough.

They will become frustrated and develop undesirable behavioral characteristics. Letting your dog off the leash can sometimes trigger such behavior, as even the most well-trained dogs can become distracted and overlook commands.

Exercises such as agility, herding, tracking, and dock diving efficiently engage these dogs mentally and physically, thus regulating their temperament.

The American Kennel Club declares the ideal show line German Shepherds to be regal in temperament, a dog with a noble bearing, fearless and self-confident. Dogs that are a little reserved are more likely to make their mark in a show ring.

West German Working Line Vs Ddr Working Line Vs Czech Shepherd

As covered above, working line German Shepherds can vary in utility across different dimensions. When choosing one that suits your needs, you must look at two factors: the context in which the dog was bred and how well the line was preserved. Lets look at each of these factors after comparing the breeds at a glance:

West German working line is more balanced in looks and working utility than DDR and Czech Shepherds. DDR GSDs are bred with a stricter emphasis on work, while the Czech line has recently become more appearance-focused. All working lines fare better in endurance compared to show line GSDs.

Short History Of The American Show Line German Shepherd

Did you know that the German Shepherd is one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world today? In the U.S, its also the second most popular American Kennel Club-registered dog breed.

It has long origins in history, too. Originating from Germany in 1899, it was bred to help shepherds keep their sheep safe and to herd them.

You may still see German Shepherds referred to as Alsatians. This is a nod to the German-French border area, Alsace-Lorraine.

They acquired the name in the World Wars to distance the breed from its country of origin, but breeders campaigned in 1977 to have it switched back to the original and, more accurate, name.

How Long Do American Show Line German Shepherds Live

German Shepherds generally live between 10 and 14 years. Because of irresponsible backyard breeding, many show lines suffer from severe health issues and have shorter-than-average lifespans. However, this isnt something you should worry about if you get your dog from a reputable breeder.

Responsible breeders take special care of their pedigrees and so will practice proper selective breeding. They will also screen their puppies for various genetic, behavioral, and health defects before selling them.

However, dont let this deter you from adopting or rescuing a German Shepherd. These dogs are among the most popular breeds in shelters and there are many that are just waiting for homes that can accommodate their size and energy.

    Different Breed Registration Processes

There are distinct breed registration procedures for both these varieties, which plays a significant part in their health as well. German show lines can be registered in Germany only if they pass a specific breed criterion.

These strict evaluations cover physical structure, endurance performance, and even herding. Governing bodies necessitate the clearing of these evaluations for registration. However, the American Kennel Club only requires the parents to be registered to enroll an American GSD offspring.

What Work Are American Show Line German Shepherds Good At

TOP West German Shepherd Show Line Puppies

As their name suggests, American Show Line German Shepherds are popular as show dogs. They participate in conformation events that bring prestige to their bloodline and help their breeders earn prominence in their field.

But even if theyre known as show dogs, show line GSDs are still excellent working dogs. They may not have the drive and nerves of steel needed for such jobs as criminal apprehension and tactical deployment. However, they perform excellently in such roles as tracking and detection.

The American Show Line German Shepherds are still very confident, courageous, and willful dogs. However, their calmer nature makes them better suited for some settings and also makes them better service dogs.

What Is An American Show Line German Shepherd

The American Show Line German Shepherd is a specific family in the broader German Shepherd net.

All GSD-type dogs originate from the dog Horand von Grafath, who Captain Max von Stephanitz owned. He helped standardize and found the breed.

Over time, as some owners wanted to focus more on aesthetics and temperament than the working drive, we saw the show line develop.

This leaves us with a calmer and brighter-coated Shepherd with a noted angularity to their frame. Show Line Shepherds arent rare by any means and are immensely popular due to their more amiable natures. They can successfully be both working dogs and beloved pets.

As with all popular dog breeds, there have been issues with backyard breeders, who care nothing for the health and well-being of the dog as long as they can make a buck. Thats not unique to American Show Line German Shepherds, but you must always consider it when buying or rescuing a dog.

This deplorable way of breeding can leave dogs of any type more prone to unpredictable tempers, bad genes, and poor health.

If you have your heart set on an American Show Line German Shepherd, it may be worth looking at purchasing from a reputable breeder, of which you will find many.

If you take a Shepherd from a rescue, spend some time chatting with the shelter about the individual dogs temper, health, and what the workers have observed, so you have the best idea possible about the dog youre taking on.

Different Coat Types On German Shepherd Dogs

THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG – Working line or Show?

Most German Shepherd Dogs have a medium length, thick, coarse coat.

But a small number carry two copies of a recessive gene for long hair, which means they grow long coats.

In most countries, a long coat is regarded as undesirable by GSD purists.

The AKC, Kennel Club and FCI all record purebred longhaired Germans Shepherds on the same register as their shorthaired counterparts, but theyre disqualified from taking part in shows.

The Australian National Kennel Club has taken a slightly different approach.

In Australia, long haired GSDs are recorded separately on their own register.

Theyre called German Shepherd Dogs, and their breed standard is word-for-word the same as the German Shepherd Dogs, except for the description of coat length.

They can enter the show ring in the German Shepherd class, where theyll be judged against other long haired GSDs.

This is the only true example of a different type of German Shepherds.

How Much Exercise Does A Show Line German Shepherd Need

Show line GSDs are bred for showing purposes or companionship, but that does not mean that they dont need exercise.

The German Shepherd breed has high energy levels and needs substantial mental and physical stimulation regardless of the subset. Although less than a working line, a show line GSD requires daily movement to keep his limbs and bones in check.

A minimum of two hours of exercise is advisable for show line German Shepherds. This time can include walks, engaging exercise, or even extra playtime and training sessions. Exercise time also depends upon the age, health, and size of your dog, e.g., a growing puppy needs less exercise.

Since this is a case-to-case scenario, you should pay attention to signs of enthusiasm as well as exhaustion in your dog. Moreover, you should be present and fully engaged when getting your best friend to exercise. This can help develop a stronger bond with your dog as well.
