Long Haired German Shepherd Dog Appearance

*Long hair German shepherd for free adoption* ð¥ð¥

These dogs are known for their bold and confident appearance.

Their intelligent brown eyes and muscular stance give them an aura of authority that nobody can deny. Their large head, strong jaw, and alert pointy ears further add to the strength of their appearance.

Overall you can expect this dog to look just like a regular German Shepherd just with a longer coat.

How To Train A Long Haired German Shepherd

Training this breed is usually quite straightforward.

German Shepherds are very smart and are always eager to please their owners. Because of this they pick up on new tricks very quickly.

Positive reinforcement is always recommended for German Shepherd training.

These pups love to make their owners happy so they will respond much better to praise than punishment. They are also very food oriented so treats will be a very helpful tool for you during training. Just make sure to not overfeed them or you may upset their sensitive stomach.

Because of their intelligence it is important that you stop your pup from getting bored.

If these dogs do not get the mental workout they need each day then they will likely chew things around your home or may dig holes in the yard.

Puzzle toys and Kongs are a great way to keep them entertained for hours.

You should also socialize these dogs from a young pup.

Whilst this Long Haired pooch is known for being more outgoing than standard German Shepherds they can sometimes be a little aloof with strangers or other dogs if they do not receive early socialization. If you introduce them to many people and dogs early on in their life then they should have no problem being kind and friendly towards everyone they meet in the future.

Do Long Haired German Shepherds Shed More Than Short Haired German Shepherds

No, this is a common misconception. Long haired German Shepherds have a thicker topcoat than an undercoat, so there is less shedding because theres less undercoat. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance.

They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. You may notice the occasional leaves, twigs, or burrs getting caught in a long haired German Shepherds fur, but regular brushing is an easy fix for this.

It is also a common misconception that long haired German Shepherds dont have an undercoat like their short haired relatives. While it is a rare occurrence for a long haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season.

What Is A Long Coat German Shepherd

Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies FOR SALE ADOPTION from london ...

For most people it’s probably fairly easy to determine what a long coat German Shepherd is – it simply refers to the length of their fur.

Whilst a “standard” German Shepherd will traditionally have short fur, long coats are the result of a recessive gene that any dog can carry.

It doesn’t mean long coats have any problems – far from it, and for many people they are an even more desirable dog than the standard breed German Shepherd.

Long haired German Shepherds look incredibly handsome, and if you’re happy with the additional effort required in grooming them and keeping their hair in good condition then they’re as loyal and obedient as any other German Shepherd.

Ready To Add A German Shepherdto Your Family

We love Shepherds! All of our volunteers believe that German Shepherds are the cutest, sweetest breed ever. But, we have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that they arent for everyone. They can be high energy, demanding a lot of attention and exercise. They also HERD and protect. Moving objects such as small animals and small children are subject to being herded. If you are looking for a low energy, quiet dog, a GSD probably would not be a good fit.

Keeping that all in mind, the good news is that sharing your life with a shepherd can be very rewarding. A sensitive breed, they can sense emotions and act as calming caregivers to those they care about. GSDs are natural family pack protectors and come to know and love those that you and your family love. When you give a shepherd a safe and loving home, they will thank you with loyalty and love beyond measure.

Should I Trim My Long Haired German Shepherd’s Coat

The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs and then thin the bushy tail.

Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Home of AKC RegisteredPlush and Long CoatGerman Shepherd Dogs and PuppiesHello, I am Nancy Lieb Nothstein of TN. I began my breeding program in 1982. My dedication and continued efforts are to keep the long coat German Shepherds alive. I give breeding rights for the purpose of preserving the long coat bloodlines. I strive to maintain the quality of the German Shepherd Dogs as I improve my puppies making them the best working, security, service or therapy dogs along with being a fantastic family member. I breed for confirmation, straight backs not for angulation, fantastic temperaments and excellent health.
THE LONG-HAIRED SHEPHERD ANCESTOR TO THE SHORT-HAIR SHEPHERDThe German Shepherd is a dog whose original function was to herd and work. The German Shepherds are used as therapy, service dogs in search and rescue work, tracking, as a seeing eye dog, to herd sheep and cattle and horses , or as a guard dog, and in drug detection and other areas of the law enforcement. The basic instinct of the breed lends itself to these multiple uses. Because of its unique versatility they are used for just about anything. My puppies are great for all the above and for families with or with out children who would like the dog as a companion, pet or protection.

How Much Does A Long Coat German Shepherd Cost

Free Dog Adoption *3 Long hair German Shepherd*

Whilst a long coat can be a far more desirable dog for some people, when it comes to price they can actually work out around the same price, or even cheaper, than a standard German Shepherd. This is because a long haired dog can’t be registered with the AKC as they’re not considered true to the standard breed.

The dogs we breed and train here at Regis Regal come from some of the best bloodlines in the world, and so whilst the dogs we have won’t be the cheapest, we feel very confident that you will struggle to find a better dog.

Long Haired German Shepherd Lifespan And Health

The lifespan of long haired German Shepherds is almost the same as that of their short haired counterparts approximately 9-13 years. They can also suffer from the same diseases. The issues may include digestive problems, epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia, and eczema. Dysplasia is a genetic issue, while others mentioned can be a result of improper breeding techniques. In the case of careless breeding, a number and variety of hereditary problems increase.

Veterinary care should become a norm for you and your dog. Physical examination has to include X-rays, blood tests, and other methods to detect different health conditions.

What Is Their Temperament Like

There is no discernible difference between the temperament of a long coat German Shepherd and a normal short coat dog.

For a long time they’ve been unfairly labelled as being difficult, but sadly this really stems from them not being accepted due to falling outside the normal breeding standard.

Long haired German Shepherds we’ve raised here at Regis Regal have gone on to be used as search dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs and therapy dogs. There’s no reason long coats can’t perform as well or better than short coats – and they do look quite incredible at the same time!

How To Care For A Long Haired German Shepherd

German Shepherds with long hair are undemanding. It is better to keep them in a good aviary on the territory of a private house. But if the dog lives in an apartment, it is necessary to keep it active and provide long daily walks.

Although this breeds thick fur is highly attractive, it also requires a lot of attention.

This long haired breed sheds continuously. The beginning of the fall and spring is when this shedding is most intense. If youre interested in bringing one of these fluffy friends into your home, youll need a good vacuum cleaner.

These adorable dogs are susceptible to matting as a result of the length of their fur as well. To prevent matting, you will be required to brush them frequently.

You can choose to brush them every day, but at the very least, you should do so two to three times every week. To remove any tough mats or tangles, thoroughly comb through their coat with a long-toothed brush. Shepherds should be brushed with a special brush twice a week and every day during shedding. The undercoat on the belly should also be brushed.

But be careful not to scratch their skin. Since these puppies often lack an undercoat, it is simple to irritate them while combing and cause them to itch. Brush softly but thoroughly.

You should pay particular attention to their skin while you groom them.

Avoid over-washing long haired German Shepherds because they are prone to dry skin and dermatitis. You only need to take a bath once a month, and you can use mild shampoo.

Long Haired German Shepherd Price

Since the AKC does not fully approve long haired German Shepherd dogs, their cost is lower than that of short haired dogs. You can pay $500-$1,500 for such a puppy. The cost can reach $2,000-$2,500 if you buy a dog from a well-known and reputable breeder.

However, many breeders are not interested in raising long haired Shepherds, so, if they detect a long haired gene in their stud, they try to get rid of such a dog. Many of them are put in shelters. So, you can adopt such an adult doggie at $200-$450, or just get it for free.

Long Haired German Shepherd Temperament And Behavior

This variety has almost the same temperament as the short haired one does. They are immensely protective and loyal. Though, they also tend to expose separation anxiety.

The main difference is in working capability. Since they have beautiful long hair, which these dogs were bred for, they are not quite suitable for work. Instead, these German Shepherds are more friendly to strangers and always ready to please their owners.

The difference is in exercising. Sure, they are as energetic and lively as their short haired counterparts, but walking them in cold weather is a bit problematic. They cannot do well when it is freezing or raining. If you live in an area with a cold and wet climate, consider these conditions before adopting long haired GSDs.

These dogs are also very obedient, but they need constant contact with the owners family. That is why they can become fantastic indoor dogs who are quite playful and pleasing. They like engaging with toys and family members. Moreover, these dogs are immensely protective, so they can display extreme bravery when their owners are in danger. This nature also makes them excellent playmates for children and caring babysitters. German Shepherd with long hair needs a lot of exercise every day. They should have a stable outlet to spend their energy. Playing fetch or Frisbee is great for them.

How Big Do Long Haired German Shepherds Get

Ranchi Dog. long coat German Shepherd .. and puppy details long coat Rocky ð

Long haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes.

  • Males: 24-26 inches tall, 65-90 pounds
  • Females: 22-24 inches tall, 50-70 pounds

Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked #2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs.

Where Are German Shepherd Dogs From

Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in 1899 of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd.

Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence.

During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. At the same time, the AKC changed the breeds name from German Sheepdog to Shepherd Dog, and Britain changed it to Alsatian Wolfdog, both attempts to dissociate the dog from its unpopular German roots.

The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. In 1931, the AKC restored the breeds name to German Shepherd Dog.

Where Can I Obtain A Long Haired German Shepherd Puppy

Long haired puppies cost less than their short haired counterparts. Though, they are rarer. If you want to get a puppy from a reputable breeder, you will need to wait for it longer. Well-experienced breeders do not like to raise such offspring because these dogs are not suitable for work and shows. You need to do thorough research concerning breeders who can offer you long haired puppies. If you dont mind adopting an adult dog, you do it at a lower price, getting your most well-trained and obedient companion from a special club or shelter.

Do Long Haired German Shepherds Shed More

Long Haired German Shepherd Adoption

Both varieties tend to shed. However, short haired dogs shed intensively in spring and fall when there are shedding seasons. Long haired Shepherds shed equally all year round. The shed of long haired animals is kept trapped in the long fur, so it does not make furniture, clothes, and other household items messy.
