The skills are protection, attacking, and tracking. A German Shepherd will receive full training in the police dog academy, but they must possess those necessary three skills.

After Purchasing a Puppy, you can choose to have your dog trained here or you can Purchase a Trained Puppy, one already finished with Obedience from the Beginning Training Programs. We also offer training for German Shepherd puppies from other areas.
The training skills we teach are the basic fundamentals every puppy should know. Each program is custom tailored to suit each dog and familys needs. All commands are taught in German unless otherwise specified. All dog training is conducted here at our location in Rochester, Washington served by PDX airport in Portland Oregon and SEA Seattle Washington State.

German Shepherd Protection Training

How Long Does It Take To Train A German Shepherd Police Dog
Most police dogs will take on average 4 to 6 months to complete their basic training and ready to start active service with their police handler. However, some K9 and German Shepherd police dogs will take longer to train dependent on personality and character.
About The German Shepherd
German Shepherds possess many fine attributes that make them ideal working dogs. It is estimated that ranks of German Shepherds serving in United States Law Enforcement tally over 8,000. Armed with intelligence, loyalty, trainability and endurance, it is no wonder that police and military canine handlers all around the world consider their German Shepherds more than just a dog. The breed has been known for their work with law enforcement for so many years that many people automatically refer to them as police dogs.
German Shepherds utilized as working dogs is nothing new. They were purposely bred from the beginning of their origin to assist man. In the late 1800s, An ex-cavalry captain and former student of the Berlin Veterinary College, Max Von Stephanitz had a strong belief that dogs should be bred specifically for working. While attending a dog show in 1899, he witnessed a dog named Hektor Linksrhein perform. Hektor was a product of selective breeding and fulfilled the requirements of what Von Stephanitz was looking for. Impressed by the animals strength, intelligence, loyalty and beauty, he purchased Hektor immediately. After purchasing the dog, he changed his name to Horand von Grafrath and eventually Von Stephanitz founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde . Horand became the first registered German Shepherd and became the standard of future breeding programs with other registered dogs with the same desirable traits.

Your Gsd Doesn’t Communicate Like A Human
Secretly we all wish that our dogs could speak a human language!
We also know that they don’t come with a pre-installed language program!
Although your Shepherd can’t speak, they can communicate. And as I mentioned earlier, dogs are masters of body language!

With that being said, here are a couple of tips for using words and cues in your German Shepherd training plans
- Short and sweet cues are more useful than longer phrases.
- Be mindful of your tone and volume. Giving a cue in a different tone or volume can mean the difference between your dog responding or not.
Training Goal #: Socialization
Puppies of all breeds have a critical socialization window that closes at 12 to 16 weeks of life, and your GSD puppy is no exception. In fact, for GSDs, who by nature are protective guardians, socialization is extra important so that your puppy learns which strangers are friendly and not a threat.
GSDs are very observant, and your puppy will pick up on your cues and reactions around new people and new situations. During this critical period, having exposure to many different kinds of people in non-threatening situations will help your puppy be confident among friendly strangers rather than fearful or aggressive. And even during times of social and physical distancing, you can still socialize your puppy safely.
Proper socialization cannot be overemphasized for this breed as Adams notes, The foundation for most training is confidence. It is critical that the GSD puppy is well socialized from an early age onward. Safely exposing the puppy to new sights, sounds, and smells is absolutely critical for development. Good socialization translates to confidence.
Certified dog trainer and CGC evaluator Jacqui Foster, CPDT-KA, echoes this sentiment: I tend to lean more towards developing self-confidence in the puppy. For this I recommend short, fun, three-minute games that engage the puppy with the owner as well as in noises, weird and uneven surfaces, family members, etc., throughout the day. A confident puppy is a happy puppy.

What To Expect During Dog Training
During your dog’s training, you can expect to see results! In addition to learning basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and down, your dog will also learn how to walk on a leash without pulling, how to socialize with other dogs and people, and how to be comfortable in any environment. We want our dogs that complete our training to be well-rounded members of society.
Using Treats Is Effective For Dog Training
Dogs are easily motivated by food. Thats why many trainers use dog treats to reward dogs for performing commands. Small dog treats allow for several repetitions before the dog becomes disinterested. More often than not, youll be the one cutting them off.
To avoid creating a bribe instead of a reward, keep the treat hidden. This way, the dog wont expect the treat until they perform the command.

Youll also want to be careful about what treats you use. Many dog treats have high calories or can disrupt your dogs digestion if they get too many while training. Its important to choose training treats that are small and fragrant to motivate your dog.

Teaching An Old Dog New Commands
Because it takes older dogs longer to learn new tricks and commands, be patient. It may take more time and more repetition, but you can teach your old dog to respond to German commands. If you teach an old dog a German command for an English command they already know, you will want to use both the English and German commands together. Then slowly eliminate the English command to see if the dog responds to the German command correctly
Dont lose hope if you want to teach your old dog to respond to German commands. Exercise patience, love, and lots of repetition, and your old dog can learn too. Once your dog understands its new commands, youll be able to impress your friends with your bi-lingual dog.
