Allergy Locations On The German Shepherd

World class German Shepherd Red and Black

Allergies that manifest externally can occur anywhere on a German Shepherds body. Frequent locations for allergic inflammations in this breed are the face, ears, paws, sides, hind end, legs, and stomach. Dandruff, flaky skin, dry skin, hot spots, hair loss in patches, and sores are symptoms of skin allergies that can be found in any of the previously mentioned areas of the dogs body.

Allergies that affect the eyes and ears must be monitored and addressed with care. These are common allergy locations, so look out for irritated, red, teary eyes and ears that are itchy, smelly, and red. The ears, in particular, can lead to painful secondary infections if the allergies are not resolved.

Red German Shepherd Puppies

If youre like me, the most common German Shepherd adults and puppies I see are colored black and tan. When a friend of mine said he was thinking of getting a red German Shepherd puppy, I thought What is that? Id heard of red poodles but not red German Shepherds! I had so many questions so I went ahead and did some research.

Red German Shepherd puppies cost between $500-$2000. Their uncommon coats are a rich mahogany red color combined with a deep black. Whether youre looking for a sweet family dog or a protective guard dog, a well-trained red German Shepherd puppy is a great option.

While having a purebred red German Shepherd puppy may be a top concern for you, you will also want to ensure the dog itself is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle. If you need any job done, just ask your dog. GSD owners understand their dogs were developed as working dogs. In fact, the ideal German Shepherd has a body and gait suited to the hard work that is considered its primary purpose. This means your dog can excel at almost anything. From dog sports like rally, agility, scent work, therapy work, to service dog work, German Shepherds can do it all. The only thing holding your dog back is the time and energy you can commit to training. Its no wonder people always think your dog is a service or police dog.

Q& a: Why Can’t My Dog Stand On His Back Legs

Blue is described as a slight dilution of black. Depending on how dark the blue color is, these dogs might still be shown in the ring. Breeders consider light blue to be undesirable, though.

German Shepherds that are liver and tan have the appropriate saddle and mask markings, but instead of black, they have a rich brown color.

    Red German Shepherd Puppies Price

Generally, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $2000 US dollars.

Below are some of the main factors to keep in mind that can influence the Red German Shepherd puppies price.

    • Age As with most dogs, the younger the dog is, the more expensive the cost will be. Puppies between the age of 8-12 weeks will cost the most because theyre able to be more easily trained.
    • BloodlinePurebred puppies are more costly, so unless you plan on entering your puppy in a show, this extra cost may not be worth it for you.
    • Location Shopping for puppies in smaller cities can save you some money. Also, take a look at the breeding regulations in the area, which could affect the cost.
    • Certifications While it seems reasonable that breeders with certifications should cost more, this isnt always the case. Be sure to do your research to make sure the breeder is actually qualified.
    • Warranties though this will likely factor into the cost, this is something to look out for. If any issues come up, you want to know you chose a breeder that allows you to return the puppy.

The Connection Between Skin And Food Allergies

Kraftwerk K9 German Shepherd Black & Red Gentle Giant!

German Shepherds are at a high risk of developing food hypersensitivity, and if your dog does develop a food allergy, the skin is often where chronic inflammations appear. A cutaneous adverse food reaction can be responsible for a multitude of skin issues. If those skin disorders are also accompanied by excessive scratching, itching, or biting, or if your dog rubs his face frequently, a food allergy may be the reason why. Chronic allergic reactions and self-trauma can lead to secondary bacterial or yeast infections accompanied by crusting, seborrhea, or alopecia.

Often the source of food allergies in canines is an animal protein like beef or chicken. Sometimes dogs develop food intolerances to other food sources such as milk, corn, and eggs. Your German Shepherd reactions to a food allergy may not be limited to his skin he may also develop gastrointestinal issues that can make life doubly uncomfortable.

German Shepherds Are Known As A Mouthy Breed

They tend to use their mouths as an appendage thanks to their herding heritage. Its even right there in their name, ShepHERD. This mouthing behavior is natural, so expect your GSD to mouth you and chew anything that will fit inside their mouth. However, that doesnt mean you should allow it. What might be cute in your small puppy will get more powerful as your dog grows up. Training your dog not to bite your hand or the chew on the furniture is essential with this breed. Teach your German Shepherd to channel those instincts safely and appropriately.

A German Shepherd That Is Not Black Can Produce Black German Shepherd Puppies

Yes, you heard right. A German Shepherd that is, say, black and tan, can carry the recessive solid black gene and produce Black German Shepherd puppies. However, both parents must have the recessive gene for solid black to appear in the litter. So if you go to meet your puppy and see that the parents arent solid black, dont be surprised! It can happen. The second way solid Black German Shepherd puppies are produced is by mating two solid blacks. This mix can only produce a solid black litter.

    Red Sable German Shepherd

The red sable German Shepherd color is another variation on their sable coat which is due to the dominant agouti gene.

These genes however are not diluted like in the gray Shepherd, in this coat, a deep reddish-brown replaces the usual tan in the sable pattern.

This coat coloration has intermingling of red and black over most areas of their body.

    Children And Other Pets

Red and Black Long Haired (Long Coat) German Shepherds Dancing on a Heavenly Mountain.

If theyre well-trained and have had plenty of exposure to kids, especially as a puppy, a German Shepherd is a great companion for children. In fact, some say theyre a cross between a babysitter and a cop, both gentle with, and protective of, the children in their family.

This is a big dog, though, capable of mistakenly bumping a toddler or small child. True to their reserved nature, theyre not tail-wagging friendly with kids they dont know, but theyre generally trustworthy.

The German Shepherd can also live peacefully with other dogs and pets, as long as theyre taught to do so from puppyhood. Introducing an adult German Shepherd to a household with other pets can be more difficult if the dog isnt used to getting along with other dogs or cats. You may need to hire a professional trainer to help, or get advice from the rescue organization if thats where you acquired the adult German Shepherd.

What Colors Do German Shepherds Come In

The most common colors are black and tan, black and red, black and cream, or black and silver. These colors cover the dog in one of these three patterns:

    • Saddleback the black overlays the dogs back and sides . The rest of the dog is tan, red, cream, or silver. Usually theres some black on the face, as well.
    • Blanketback the black extends further down the shoulders and hips.
    • Bicolor like a Doberman or Rottweiler, which is mostly black with small tan/red/cream markings specifically confined to the head, chest, and legs. Honestly I dont know why this pattern is called bicolor, which simply means two colors. As weve just seen, the other two patterns also have just two colors.

Another common color is sable, which is an overall shade of gray, golden, or red, with black-tipped hairs that create a dusted with black effect.

A less common, but perfectly acceptable, color is solid black.

    Faulty colors

Then there are two controversial colors: blue and liver:

    • Blue German Shepherds have inherited a color-modifying gene that changes their black pigment to smoky gray. Many blue dogs look as though theyve been dusted with flour.
    • Liver German Shepherds have inherited a color-modifying gene that changes their black pigment to brown .

Blue and liver are considered serious faults by the official German Shepherd clubs and breeders who show their dogs in the conformation ring. But you can still register these dogs and compete with them in activities such as obedience and agility.

    Black & Silver German Shepherd

The black and silver German Shepherd is another common color combination. Even though they look more exotic than your average GSD, breeders still breed them, as theyve been growing in popularity.

Most of the time, color distribution may vary from dog to dog. However, they will typically have a silver base on the bottom of their body and black on the top half on their body.

The hue of black can range from a dark gray to a deep black. In some instances, the German Shepherd may have silver with multiple shades of black on the coat.

These dogs are truly spectacular in terms of appearance, and its not difficult to see why theyve been more prevalent among families in the United States .

    Common German Shepherd Health Issues

Beautiful FCI German shepherd long haired black and red

As with all purebreds, there are common health issues in German Shepherds that the breed is prone to developing. Some of the most prevalent medical conditions affecting GSDs include:

    • Elbow dysplasia – A disease most commonly implicated in front limb lameness
    • Hip dysplasia – An abnormal formation of the hip socket that causes the thigh bone to pop out
    • Elbow hygroma – A fluid-filled swelling that occurs over the elbow joint
    • Degenerative myelopathy – A progressive disease that affects the spinal cord in older dogs
    • Gastric dilatation-volvulus – Commonly associated with large meals and gas causing the stomach to rotate
    • Von Willebrand disease – Causes blood to clotting insufficiencies resulting in inappropriate bleeding
    • Degenerative spinal stenosis – A painful disease affecting the spinal cord

Not all German Shepherds develop these dog health issues, but its important to become aware of them if youre considering getting this breed.

Pro Tip: Enrolling your GSD in pet insurance could save you money by reimbursing you up to 100% of vet costs paid out of pocket.

    Do German Shepherds Change Color

German Shepherds do change color, especially if they are bicolor. This happens when they mature and shed certain colored fur but never grow it back. The color change is most prominent in brindle GSDs and sable shepherds, as the decrease in one shade of fur leads to a change in the overall look of the dog.

That said, you should never purchase a German Shepherd puppy hoping it will change color because if it doesnt, you will be disappointed in your dog for something that isnt his fault. German Shepherds are extremely intelligent and can pick up on your energy or lack of it, affecting your dogs self-esteem.
