There are shelters and rescue groups that take no fee for supplies and food but will charge fees for puppies. This can be a great way to get two dogs at the same time and save money at the same time since there are no costs associated with food or boarding.

One way to find a free Illinois German Shepherd for adoption in your area is to do an online search. Various websites will let you browse through the different dogs and give you contact information. Ready To Add A German Shepherdto Your Family

We love Shepherds! All of our volunteers believe that German Shepherds are the cutest, sweetest breed ever. But, we have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that they arent for everyone. They can be high energy, demanding a lot of attention and exercise. They also HERD and protect. Moving objects such as small animals and small children are subject to being herded. If you are looking for a low energy, quiet dog, a GSD probably would not be a good fit.

Keeping that all in mind, the good news is that sharing your life with a shepherd can be very rewarding. A sensitive breed, they can sense emotions and act as calming caregivers to those they care about. GSDs are natural family pack protectors and come to know and love those that you and your family love. When you give a shepherd a safe and loving home, they will thank you with loyalty and love beyond measure.

What Is The German Shepherds Temperament

These pups are intelligent and noble, yet they can be somewhat stubborn at times. This is probably due to their high intelligence, as they dont just follow blindly. They are fiercely loyal to their owners and very protective. They are alert and curious, which makes them great watchdogs. Having a German Shepherd can provide you with a strong feeling of safety when walking around town or sleeping at home. German Shepherds are great family dogs, and are generally a smart option for families with children or other pets. Of course, like any animal, if not treated and cared for properly, German Shepherds can become aggressive or unruly.

German Shepherds Thrive In New York City

The German Shepherd is a large dog perfect for a large city like New York. These big, athletic pups are known for their abilities as guard and service dogs, and also for their energetic spirit and loyalty to their owner. Originally bred as a guard dog for sheep, the German Shepherd is highly intelligent, trainable, and active.

The German Shepherd became one of the most adopted dogs in America after gaining fame in popular culture through movies like Rin Tin Tin. This contributed to the German Shepherd becoming a favorite family dog, and they remain so to this day. Feel free to check out the German Shepherds many qualities and breed information.

One things for sure, when you walk New Yorks blocks with your German Shepherd, you will find plenty of activities for you and your dog to enjoy. For example, the 72nd Street Dog Run is a large, fenced-in, off-leash area for your active German Shepherd. It even offers a separate space for big dogs like the German Shepherd to socialize with other larger pups.

If your German Shepherd doesnt get enough out of just running, check out Chelsea Waterside Dog Park on 23rd and 11th avenue. Here, your German Shepherd can play with others and take a dip in the Hudson River to cool off on a hot day.

New York is the ideal home for a rough-and-tumble breed like the German Shepherd, so dont be afraid to make a German Shepherd a new part of your family!

What Kind Of Grooming Does Your Gsd Need

You should brush your German Shepherd every three to five days. Usually, you need a pin brush and a de-shedding tool. The former helps give the guard hairs shine while the latter removes loose tufts from the undercoat. When your dog experiences heavy sheds during fall and spring, you will probably need to brush her every day. Clip nails and bathe in a mild shampoo about every six weeks.

Heartworm Prevention For Dogs

Heartworm prevention for dogs is an important concern for every pet owner. Prevention is an important part of providing essential care, and heartworm disease prevention for dogs is something every owner can do. Consider this:

Some preventives only prevent heartworms, some protect pets from heartworms and intestinal parasites, and some protect pets from many different parasites, including heartworms, intestinal worms, fleas, ticks, and mites. Because veterinarians know which parasites are common in the area in which they practice, owners should talk to their pets doctor about what product or products will be best for their pets.

Cheap German Shepherds For Sale

If you are looking for a German Shepherd, avoid Craigslist and other free listing sites. Most of these dogs will likely have poor temperament and/or assorted health problems.

Dont make price your primary consideration. Backyard breeders and puppy mills price low to sell quickly. Avoid these unscrupulous breeders.

Even if an ad reads AKC registered dogs, this is not necessarily a sign of a quality dog. My AKC registered dog came from a BYB. Be aware that Puppy Mills also use this as a lure for unsuspecting buyers.

What You Should Know When Searching For Free German Shepherd Puppies

When trying to find a German Shepherd puppy for free, it is always a good idea to first learn about the breed. This way, when you contact the person offering a puppy, you can ask essential questions. You will want to ask about the puppys parents, health, and behavior.

These things will help you ascertain the quality of the puppy and if there could be any health or medical issues. Remember seeing the puppy in person is always recommended over seeing videos or pictures. If you live close by, you must go to see it.

The puppys temperament is also important and something you can only know if you see the puppy in person. Of course, that should always be your first choice because that is the only way to see if the animal is a good match for your family.

The other important thing to remember is that you must have funds when taking the puppy home for veterinary bills, dog food, microchipping, vaccinations, and flea treatments. In essence, the puppy might be free but keeping it isnt.

28 German Shepherds In Protective Custody For 2 Years Are Going Up For Adoption

Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue is a 5013 non-profit organization. We are a breed-specific group dedicated to the rescue of German Shepherd Dogs and do not knowingly accept mixed-breed dogs into our program. Our GSDs are obtained from public shelters where they are scheduled to be euthanized or they are given to us directly by their owners. All dogs receive the necessary health care, including spaying/neutering and are micro-chipped and then are placed in a foster home until they are adopted. Our dogs are guaranteed a place in our organization throughout their life. We provide information and education to the community with emphasis on the importance of spaying/neutering and heart-worm prevention, and we work with transporters, animal shelters and other rescue organizations to develop a better life for all GSDs.

GHGSDR is guided by three core values: dedication, integrity and compassion.

Woodys Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary

Woodys Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary Inc is a 501c3 non-profit rescue located in Greentown, Pennsylvania.

It has been in existence since 2011.

The goal of this rescue is to take in older German Shepherds, typically 8 years and older.

Woodys Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary was founded by Dawn Mimnaugh, whose love of German Shepherds started when she was a small child.

She began volunteering with a German Shepherd rescue in 2005 and fostered a 10-year-old German Shepherd who had been surrendered to a shelter when his owner was deployed to the military.

Her experience with this dog, named Woody, was what caused her to start this rescue.

Woodys Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary takes in German Shepherds that otherwise would not be likely to find a home.

Some of the dogs in their care are adopted out, while others stay at the sanctuary for life.

Woodys Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary chooses whether to keep a dog at the sanctuary or adopt it out based on a number of factors.

They are likely to keep very old dogs that may have difficulty adapting to another home, dogs with medical conditions like degenerative myelopathy or fecal or urinary incontinence, or behavioral issues.

Once Woodys Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary commits to a resident dog, they keep that dog for the entirety of its lifetime and treat whatever medical conditions it may have.

You can transport dogs, take them for walks at the sanctuary, or foster.
