Dog Proofing Your Home
Remember, dogs are curious and active and, like children, will want to explore everything everywhere especially puppies and young dogs. Your home can be a dangerous place for your dog and you may not even be aware of the dangers. Cleansers, drain cleaners, anti-freeze, paint removers, chocolate, grapes, macadamia nuts, many medications, etc., can all be deadly. The garden can also harbor poisonous plants and bulbs, weed-killers, snail bait, fertilizers, mushrooms, etc. Dog-proof your home by moving dangerous items to locked or very high cabinets and removing or relocating dangerous plants.
Dog-proofing your home also means making sure that you have high fences and gates that are locked on the inside.
What If The Dog I Adopt Gets Sick
We do our best to ensure that your new dog is in good health. When we know about medical issues, we will share them with you before you adopt. Should you dog become ill within the first 14 days after adoption, we may authorize treatment at our expense. We also suggest that you see your regular veterinarian within 14 days of adoption. Pet insurance can be of great assistance should your dog become ill and there are many providers and levels of insurance available.
Where Do You Get Your Dogs
Many of our dogs find themselves abandoned or no longer wanted and end up in a shelter. We have many partnerships with shelters that notify us when there is a dog in need. Our experienced team will go to the shelter, evaluate the dog and bring the dog into our program if they feel the dog is stable and adoptable. Some dogs come from owners who are no longer able to care for their dogs. We evaluate the dog much in the same way as a shelter dog. If the dog passes, they may stay with the owner until an adopter is found or, if we have the space, the dog comes into our program.

What If I Can’t Keep The Dog I Adopt
We hope that your decision to adopt one of our dogs means you have thought about the commitment required and understand that there may be issues with your dog that will require further training. We hope you see your new dog as a full family member and consideration for your dog’s welfare is included when planning a new family or relocating your home. We do understand that there will be times when there is no other choice available, and we will be there for your dog. You may return your dog to us however please understand that we may not have an immediate place for your dog and may require you to hold your dog until a place is secured.

Meeting Your Current Dog
When you adopt your new dog, we will require you to introduce all family members, including current dog. While this introduction may go perfectly fine in a neutral environment, your home may be quite different. This is your current dogs territory with their bowls, beds, toys, balls, etc. They may not want to share right away.
Reintroduce your dogs slowly and calmly. You may want to take them to a neutral spot or a walk around the immediate area. Make sure adults are present, each responsible for one dog. Keep a few yards apart, then stop and chat, again keeping them apart for a couple of minutes. Now allow them to meet as nonchalantly as possible. Keep the leashes loose but remain vigilant. Try to project that you are calm and relaxed. The dogs have met at least once before already during your visit and may have ridden home together, so this meeting should go smoothly for the most part.
While your dogs are getting to know each other, they should be crated or tethered separately in your vehicle or be put into different vehicles. You dont want your dogs to have a disagreement while you are driving and cant manage it.
You may want to crate your new dog at night for the first few weeks until youre sure the dogs get along well. You should ALWAYS be present whenever the dogs are together for the first couple of MONTHS! They are still working things out and establishing boundaries with each other.
Things To Have Ready For Your New Dog
a) A crate as discussed above. A wire crate is preferrable as they are less confining and allow more air circulation than a plastic crate. Crates come in sizes so make sure your crate is large enough for your dog to easily turn around in.
b) Collars and ID tags or a collar with permanent ID are a MUST! There are many types of collars for different activities and different training needs. Your dog will have a martingale collar, leash and an ID tag with our tag number and phone number. We recommend you leave this tag on your dogs collar, along with your personal tags, just in case you cannot be reached should your dog get out. Let us be a second level of protection.
We ask that you do not use aversive collars such as pinch/prong collars, shock/e-collars, choke chains, etc. as these may do more harm than good. Please do your research and work with a fear-free or punishment-free trainer. Training may take longer but your bond with your dog will be stronger, and you wont have to rely on these aversive collars just to walk your dog.
Your dogs microchip will be transferred to you shortly after adoption.
c) Food, bowls and treats. We will give you a small amount of the food your dog has been eating to help with any transition needed. Remember to feed a high quality of food as discussed above.
Treats should also be of high quality. Treats used for training should also be high value treats, something your dog just cant resist. Kibble is probably not high value.

There are several things we will be discussing with you. We want to learn about your family and understand your knowledge and experience with dogs. We will discuss your lifestyle and talk to you about your environment. We want our dogs to be in a safe environment with secure fencing and gates, free of poisonous plants or harmful objects, with adequate shelter, etc. Some adopters dont even realize they have a potentially harmful situation for a dog and are grateful we brought it to their attention.

Are They Spayed/neutered
As a rescue, we are legally required to spay/neuter all adopted dogs. If a dog is too young to spay or neuter at the time of adoption, we will collect a $200 deposit from you and return it once you provide proof of sterilization from your veterinarian. If spaying or neutering a dog will be detrimental to its health, we will provide a statement from our veterinarian stating such and you will be required to work with your veterinarian to determine an appropriate time for the procedure, if applicable.

Do I Have To Have A Fenced Back Yard
We prefer adopters to have a well-fenced, safe area for their dog and may require you to repair broken/missing fencing prior to adopting a dog. However, we know that in some situations fencing is not possible. In this case, youll need to help us understand how you plan to keep your dog safe while providing necessary outdoor time. We also suggest that your yards are free of dangerous vegetation such as foxtails and poisonous plants.
Will They Like My Kids Cats Etc
We evaluate all our dogs very carefully. We will let potential adopters know everything we know about each dogs behavior around people, other dogs, cats, kids, other critters, etc. Not all of our foster homes have kids, cats or other critters so we may not know the dogs behavior in these areas. While we try to expose our dogs to every possible situation, there are some situations we are not able to arrange.

On October 28th, 2011, 60 German Shepherds moved from a dog boarding facility in downtown Los Angeles to the Westside German Shepherd Rescues newly built, state of the art, 11,000 sq. ft. structure in Westwood.
This Cape Cod home styled building opens to a boardwalk lined by beachside cabins.
