Most of the GSDs brought into our rescue program come from area shelters, though we also take in strays and owner surrendered GSDs. Over 40% of the dogs coming into our program are underweight, malnourished, and needing months of rehabilitation.
All of the dogs brought into our program are fully evaluated by our veterinarian and are fully vetted before being placed up for adoption.

As many of you know, we produce a calendar each year, to help raise much needed funds.
Quite a few people ask about tips for taking photos for our calendar here are some tips.
The more photos you take the better chance you will have to capture one or two good quality pictures.
Here are some pointers.
1. Take photos after or near the end of a walk, when the dog has calmed down.2. Outdoors usually look better than indoors. 3. Please dont submit photos with dogs in head collars or muzzles.4. Landscape works better than portrait for the calendar.5. Look at the photo you have taken, no really, really look at them. We receive a significant number that look good on a phone but do not look as good when enlarged to the size needed.6. There are lots of lovely dogs, but often the photos do not do them justice. 7. Whats in the background clutter or odd objects distract from the photo.8. Does the dog look bright and happy, not slouched, ears back, looking unhappy etc.9. If you enlarge the photo for a close up, does it pixelate or blur.10. Interesting locations are good, but remember its the dog that matters.

Buyer Beware: The Problem With Puppy Mills And Backyard Breeders
A Good German Shepherd Breeder or any breeder WILL NOT say “CASH ONLY”! Nor will they say “Oh I can’t let you visit with the sire or the dam, you know they are typical German Shepherds, very protective”.
If they even hint to anything similar to the above comments. . . RUN! Don’t buy one of their dogs!!!!!
Nor would a good breeder EVER sell puppies to a pet store, NEVER!
Well bred dogs will be friendly and social, which means the sire and the dam should be friendly and social. . . Otherwise you may end up with a puppy who has severe social aggression issues.

Why Should You Adopt
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.
What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

GSRNE works very hard to match the right dog with our adopters, so that youll be happy and our dogs will have a forever home.
We place dogs in the six New England states .
- The adoption fee for our dogs is: $350 for dogs ranging in age from puppies to age seven.
- $200 for seniors, age eight and older.
The fees help us meet expenses incurred by our nonprofit organization, although our average expense per rescue dog is approximately $2,000 each. These include the following if they have not already been given to the dog before coming into GSRNEs program:
Spay or Neutering
- They are all spayed or neutered prior to adoption
Vaccines:
- Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus
- Heartworm, Lyme, Elrichea, and Anaplasma
- Complete blood panel for seniors dogs or dogs that have apparent health issues
Exam:
- Check for any apparent health issues
- Microchip implanted
- Flea, tick and heartworm preventatives
Grooming
- Sometimes our dogs come in needing a grooming and we try to have this done either before the dog goes into a foster home or when they get to the foster home if the foster home is unable to bathe the dog.
Training
- Some dogs require professional training to work on additional skills and socialization to prepare them for a happy and healthy life.
Boarding
- At times we need to board our dogs. It is usually because the dog needs out of the situation it is in and we dont have a foster home available.
