German Shepherd Rescue In Virginia: Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue

This is another German Shepherd Rescue in Virginia. They are located in the Shenandoah Valley, and, according to their website, their members have been saving dogs for many years although the Rescue itself is fairly new. In their work, they strive to rescue abandoned and abused dogs from highly populated areas and states and bring them to the East Coast where they can have higher chances of being adopted. They mainly work with adopters from Virginia but do work out of state as well.

The adoption process itself may take a few weeks from start to finish. Adopters are carefully screened, from the application stage to phone call interview to reference checks and a home visit. This rescue works hard to ensure that you are a suitable home for a rehabilitated German Shepherd and that you are ready to make such a change in your life. Once you are approved to adopt a dog, you can have a week-long trial with your dog to see if you suit each other well. This Rescues adoption fee is $250-$350. As noted on their website, the center will try to provide you with the dog you want most, but they know better which dog will suit you better so you need to be ready to accept the dog that they think would be best for you.

Apart from fostering, you can also help out the Rescue by volunteering to do many tasks and activities that need to be done such as organizational help at events, transporting dogs, photography, marketing, fundraising, working with dogs and many other tasks.

How Do I Pick A Good Rescue German Shepherd

You might ask yourself what kind of German Shepherd you should adopt and rehome. You can look for outgoing dogs. You can tell that by observing their body language when you first meet.

If the dogs gesture is warm and inviting, you might want to choose that because they are confident and trusting. However, if you are also not down to unlimited patience, you can avoid a shy German Shepherd.

These dogs can be a little bit of work because they are afraid and run away from you. If you are outgoing and are a very hands-on person, you might not enjoy your German Shepherd because of its shyness.

However, this is only a guide, and if the dogs personality is not a big deal for you, you can pick any dog you want. Dogs can be trained and can also be flexible like some people are. If you love a challenge, you can pick any dog you want.

Why Are Dog Shelters Needed

Adopt Foxy on Petfinder

One of the biggest reasons German Shepherds need new homes is because theyre often considered a working breed. They spend their prime active years behind the badge and then need a loving home to live out the rest of their dog lives. German Shepherds leaving the police department often need special homes to rehabilitate while adjusting to a new life. Even though taking care of a retired dog can be challenging, its also rewarding and neat to have a former working dog as your pet. Other reasons for German Shepherds entering into shelters is that their owners cant take care of them any longer or something happened to their owners.

Many dogs need fostering badly to find out more about their personalities while waiting for the right forever home to come along. If youre a German Shepherd lover, then you know they can at times be energetic and jumpy. Theyre not ideal for specific age groups, including very young children. The addition of a new child to a family could be problematic. Some families cant afford to have a pet anymore, or they move. Although most Shepherds are lucky enough to find forever homes right away, a small portion ends up in rescue shelters in Virginia. Due to their shedding and loud barking, some pet owners find that they must surrender their pets to a humane rescue group like those listed above.

We are always in need of foster homes for dogs in our rescue. Unlike most rescues, we have a unique foster program. Our program is designed for those select individuals who truly want to work with dogs who need a second chance and are interested in improving their handling skills and knowledge of canine behavior. Our program pairs the foster with an experienced trainer/behaviorist who will develop an individualized training plan for a specific dog in order to prepare the dog for a more successful adoption.

The benefits of our program for the foster are: more appropriate foster placement, exposure to a wide variety of canine behaviors with guidance as to the best practices for addressing and shaping those behaviors, personal enrichment and improvement of canine handling skills. Finding A German Shepherd Rescue In Virginia To Adopt From

German Shepherds are one of the most beloved of all breeds, and one of the most recognizable.

Even people who dont know much about dogs likely will recognize a German Shepherd when they see one.

These dogs are known to be some of the best workers, able to do everything from leading the blind, to seeking out lost children, to taking down bad guys for the military or police.

Of course, they can also do what they were bred to do herd.

If you want a German Shepherd in your life, its important to be prepared to give them a job to do.

Agility, advanced obedience training, nose work, and more are great options.

Keep in mind that German Shepherd dogs tend to have a prey drive, which can sometimes make them incompatible with cats and small pets.

Because they also have herding instincts, they may chase livestock or try to herd other pets or children.

When rescuing a German Shepherd, its important to note that these dogs often experience a lot of stress during the rehoming process.

German Shepherds are extremely loyal, intelligent, and people-centered dogs.

They are often protective of their families and property.

All of these characteristics can make it very difficult for German Shepherds who have been abandoned to adjust to a new home.

Make sure that you go slowly and give your German Shepherd plenty of structure and love as they adapt to your home.
