Will My German Shepherd Find A New Home

Maybe. Once you leave your dog, what happens next is out of your hands. While shelters work hard to find homes for all the dogs in their care, sometimes its just not possible. Its also important to note that some shelters are forced to put down more animals than others, so you should do a little research about the shelter to which youre thinking about surrendering your dog.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some dogs become fearful and anxious in a shelter. This could manifest as aggression, which can greatly reduce your German Shepherds chances of being adopted.

German Shepherd Dog Rescue Group Of Ga Atlanta Georgia

Purebed German Shepherd puppies large frame straightbacked worki

Since its inception in 2004, the goal of German Shepherd Dog Rescue of Georgia is to find caring, permanent homes for rescue German Shepherds who have been abandoned or surrendered in Atlanta and the surrounding areas.

Since the rescue does not have a physical shelter, they depend on volunteer foster homes to care for dogs before they are adopted. They have several foster homes in Metro Atlanta and the north Georgia area.

Before arranging any appointments with the rescued dogs, all prospective adopters must first complete the adoption application and pass the pre-approval review.

Take note that the rescue does not have foster families who live outside of Georgia. Hence it would be best if you ideally lived nearby.

All application requests are assessed based on the details given, such as the presence of children or other pets in the household, the dogs possible living conditions, and any prior GSD experience.

Welcome To Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue

Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue is a 5013 non-profit organization. We are a breed-specific group dedicated to the rescue of German Shepherd Dogs and do not knowingly accept mixed-breed dogs into our program. Our GSDs are obtained from public shelters where they are scheduled to be euthanized or they are given to us directly by their owners. All dogs receive the necessary health care, including spaying/neutering and are micro-chipped and then are placed in a foster home until they are adopted. Our dogs are guaranteed a place in our organization throughout their life. We provide information and education to the community with emphasis on the importance of spaying/neutering and heart-worm prevention, and we work with transporters, animal shelters and other rescue organizations to develop a better life for all GSDs.

GHGSDR is guided by three core values: dedication, integrity and compassion.

German Shepherds Thrive In New York City

The German Shepherd is a large dog perfect for a large city like New York. These big, athletic pups are known for their abilities as guard and service dogs, and also for their energetic spirit and loyalty to their owner. Originally bred as a guard dog for sheep, the German Shepherd is highly intelligent, trainable, and active.

The German Shepherd became one of the most adopted dogs in America after gaining fame in popular culture through movies like Rin Tin Tin. This contributed to the German Shepherd becoming a favorite family dog, and they remain so to this day. Feel free to check out the German Shepherds many qualities and breed information.

One things for sure, when you walk New Yorks blocks with your German Shepherd, you will find plenty of activities for you and your dog to enjoy. For example, the 72nd Street Dog Run is a large, fenced-in, off-leash area for your active German Shepherd. It even offers a separate space for big dogs like the German Shepherd to socialize with other larger pups.

If your German Shepherd doesnt get enough out of just running, check out Chelsea Waterside Dog Park on 23rd and 11th avenue. Here, your German Shepherd can play with others and take a dip in the Hudson River to cool off on a hot day.

New York is the ideal home for a rough-and-tumble breed like the German Shepherd, so dont be afraid to make a German Shepherd a new part of your family!

Choosing A Good German Shepherd Rescue

Luna the lovely German Shepherd | Dogs Trust Evesham

If you are trying to adopt a rescued German Shepherd from German Shepherd shelters, you might be confused about what you should consider.

If you ask people to like your friends and family, they might have different opinions that confuse you. But there is not so much to consider.

The fact that you chose to adopt a rescued German Shepherd rather than buying one is already one act of kindness. You might already know that there are so many rescued German Shepherds in the world and only a few German Shepherd shelters.

If you adopt one, you are already saving a dogs life. However, if you want a good rescue, you should consider the German Shepherds temperament.

If the German Shepherd comes at you with no hesitations and no aggressiveness, you would know that it was a good rescue. If the German Shepherd is warm and inviting on your first encounter, it is already a good rescue because there are no signs of trauma or aggression.

How Much Should It Cost To Adopt A German Shepherd

A purebred GSD puppy from a reputable breeder will cost anywhere between $500 and $1,500. Adopting a rescue German Shepherd, on the other hand, may only cost you $150 to $600 on average to cover the costs of caring for the pet before adoption.

If youre a penny-pinching, genuine dog lover, its a very fair price to pay in adding a new member to the family.

Refer to the table below to see where your adoption fee goes:

Expenses
Total $365 $880

Based on the table above, the maintenance fees for your dog during their duration at the rescue are likely to be more expensive than the adoption fee.

Fortunately, some animal rescue organizations may waive some of the fees for senior dogs or dogs who have already received vaccinations and other treatments from their previous owners.

How Do I Pick A Good Rescue German Shepherd

You might ask yourself what kind of German Shepherd you should adopt and rehome. You can look for outgoing dogs. You can tell that by observing their body language when you first meet.

If the dogs gesture is warm and inviting, you might want to choose that because they are confident and trusting. However, if you are also not down to unlimited patience, you can avoid a shy German Shepherd.

These dogs can be a little bit of work because they are afraid and run away from you. If you are outgoing and are a very hands-on person, you might not enjoy your German Shepherd because of its shyness.

However, this is only a guide, and if the dogs personality is not a big deal for you, you can pick any dog you want. Dogs can be trained and can also be flexible like some people are. If you love a challenge, you can pick any dog you want.

Reasons Not To Rescue A German Shepherd Dog

If youre planning of adopting a German Shepherd and youve never had one before, here are some reasons to think carefully:

1) German Shepherds are big dogs youd be amazed at the amount of people who purchase puppies and then phone us to surrender them with the comment. The dog is 45 pounds already and I had no idea it would get this big. German Shepherd females are typically 60-75 pounds with the males sometimes reach 100 pounds. Combine this weight with their power and speed and, in the wrong hands, they can be a big handful and dangerous for young children. many apartments and rented homes set weight limits on the dogs they allow.

2) German Shepherds need to be socialized with people, dogs and situations. This is a critical role for you the new owner. Many people dont have time or even know to do this and then wonder why the dog is becoming reactive or aggressive. Its because you the owner did not build its confidence and now its fearful and reacts in the way it knows best.

3) German Shepherds shed when someone asks us if they shed we know they have not done their homework.

The Shepherd is one of the biggest shedders, to the point that many of us call them German Shedders. Youll need brushes, strong vacuum cleaners and the patience to endlessly groom and explain to friends why your house has changed so much. When your Shepherd blows their coat twice a year, you are about to be drowning in dog hair.

What To Expect When You Bring A Rescue Home

Axil the awesome German Shepherd | Dogs Trust Merseyside

Many German Shepherds have been through traumatic circumstances before arriving in a shelter or foster home. If they have been in a shelter for a long time, theyve been among a lot of other dogs and may not have received much individual attention. They may still feel stressed, so theyll need some time to adjust. But theyll also be overjoyed to be part of a family again and receiving individualized love.

A rescue dog will love you and bond with you quickly. Especially if you are rescuing a young dog, be prepared for lots of energyyoull want to plan multiple rounds of exercise each day. You should also prepare for lots of shedding! Make sure youre equipped with a good vacuum cleaner and a lint roller.
