German Shepherd Husky Mix Adoption

Do German Shepherd Husky Mixes Smell

WE ADOPTED A PUPPY! Adopting a German Shepherd Husky Mix Puppy

While this varies, many Shepsky owners have noted that the dog doesnât have a typical musky âdog smell.â

This is because Huskies do not have an oily coat, and those natural oils are largely responsible for that characteristic odor. Many Huskies pass on their low-oil coat to their crossbred offspring.

If you do adopt a Shepsky, remember not to bathe your dog too regularly. The lack of oil can make them prone to having dry skin, and excessive washing can exacerbate this problem.

Sunshine is an 12 year old, 60 pound, gorgeous female husky mix. She loves long walks and getting loved on. She would fit well in a calm home with no children. She loves being around people and would do best as an only dog. She is good with male dogs but tends not to get along with other females. She has calmed down over time and does well with similarly sized male dogs. She has not been tested with small dogs but has had some positive interactions. She walks well on a leash once she calms down and she will sit for treats. Sunshine is a tall, slender beauty that needs a strong yet gentle and loving owner. She is an active dog and needs active owners that will take her on daily walks. Like most rescue, she will need some training and tons of love.

Sunshine’s adoption fee is $150. For more information on Sunshine, please complete the online adoption application and call Shirley at .

Be Aware Of Possible Health Problems

Considering its healthy and strong parents, the German Shepherd Husky mix is generally a healthy dog. But like all dogs, it can be prone to some health conditions. Below are the conditions to be aware of:

Elbow and Hip Dysplasia

Canine Elbow Dysplasia and Hip Dysplasia are genetic, developmental joint disorders affecting a good number of dog breeds. The conditions manifest in joint malformation and can lead to osteoarthritis, an incurable and debilitating condition.

It is understandable if the Gerberian Shepsky is predisposed to these conditions since the German Shepherd is one of the breeds that are highly susceptible to hip dysplasia. Overall, in a study of 78 different breeds, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals estimates the prevalence of elbow dysplasia to range up to 47.9%, while hip dysplasia had a prevalence of up to 75% in this study of 74 breeds.

These figures varied widely among 78 breeds but in general, it is estimated that around 20% of German Shepherds will have bad hips whilst only 2% of Siberian Huskies will be affected.

Eye Conditions

The Siberian Husky bears the blame for the eye problems in the German Shepherd Husky mix. These problems include:

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a disorder of the nervous system that leads to uncontrolled seizures. According to ACKs Canine Health Foundation, canine epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder among dogs, affecting about 0.75% of the dog population.

Husky German Shepherd Mix Origins Where Did This Breed Come From

Zizhu. Young Husky/German Shepherd Mix Dog Finds His Forever Home ...

The German Shepherd Husky mix is a relatively new designer dog breed. Very little is known about where and when it originated. Many dog experts claim that the first of this kind was bred intentionally sometime in the late 1980s.

Originally, a German Shepherd and a Siberian Husky parents were mated to produce a first-rate working dog, since both the parents are excellent working dogs. Soon, because of their sheer strength and quick intellect, they were used to assist with search-and-rescue operations and took military and police roles.

It would help to get a glimpse of the origin of the parent breeds to have a better understanding of German Shepherd Husky mix.

The German Shepherd , which originated in 1899 in Germany, were used to herd sheep and pull heavy loads under tough conditions. They were imported and used as sled dogs during the Alaskan Gold Rush. The breed eventually became popular throughout Canada and the United States as great pets. The Siberian Husky is believed to have originated over two millennia ago from the Siberian Arctic. Nomadic Indian tribes used these dogs to help with pulling sleds and heavy loads. The Siberian Huskies made their way to North America in the 1900s.

Despite having relatively short history, German Shepherd Husky mixes have already become fashionable and increasingly common.

No Apartments Except With Planning And Hard Work

Imagine bringing home to your apartment a German Shepherd Husky mix and hearing him shout, Not an apartment! Thats probably what he would say if he was able to! Exercise and space are an important part of a Shepskys day.

An intelligent working dog full of energy like the Gerberian Shepsky is not meant for the limited space in an apartment but it can be done with lots of planning and extra work! However, a home with a yard where your dog can run and jump is recommended and will be easier for you. If left idle, the dog will either try to run away or become destructive.

Like all medium/large high-energy dogs, your German Shepherd Husky mix will require around 2 hours of exercise daily. This can be distributed throughout the day between walks/runs and other activities like fetch, tug of war, and catch.

Also, the Gerberian Shepskys medium/large body needs plenty of space. The male can grow up to 25 and the female 22 . Similarly, an adult male will weigh 55-80lb and the female 45-60lb . Remember though, these are very approximate sizes/weights depending on the parentage and all dogs are different.

I have a great article, Exactly How Much Space Do German Shepherds Need? This explains more in-depth the physical and mental exercise requirements of GSDs and details loads of different exercise tips if you live in an apartment or a small space. White German Shepherd Husky Mix Grooming Tips & Tricks

A fluffy German Shepherd Husky mix means shedding. This means youll have to groom your pooch more often to keep the thick coat healthy and to remove dead fur. And since the coat is super fluffy, it mats and tangles easily. So, regular grooming of your dog is necessary to prevent matting.

Brush your German Shepherd Husky mix several times a week. On top of this, take your dog to a qualified groomer every two months. Remember, start grooming your pups from an early age so they get used to the process. This will make things much easier simpler for you and your dog, especially if its a German Shepherd Husky mix.

Getting a German Shepherd Husky mix means blankets of fur, so dont be disappointed when you see your favorite clothes and everything else to be covered in fur. This dog isnt a good choice if you or some members of your family have allergies.

A German Shepherd Husky mix tends to smell like wet garments that havent been dried. Bathe your dog when needed. Avoid using a strong shampoo and use one that will help maintain their furs natural oils. Dont bathe your pup too often as this can wash these oils away.

Wax may build up in the ears of German Shepherd Husky mixes fairly often. You should clean their ears carefully using a dog-friendly cleaning solution and cotton balls or cotton buds. This will keep the ear canal clean and reduce ear odors.

German Shepherd Mixed With Husky Health Issues & Concerns

Generally, hybrids are healthier compared to purebred dogs. This is because new genes are introduced to the existing pool, strengthening and widening it. However, even a hybrid dog like a German Shepherd mixed with Husky can inherit health conditions from one of their parents. This hybrid lives between 10 to 13 years, and during this lifespan, they can develop different health issues.

Lets check out some of the health problems of a Husky German Shepherd Mix. These include:

How Does White German Shepherd Husky Mix Interact With Other Pets

Both the White German Shepherd Husky Mix and the Siberian Husky are suitable as household pets. When a German shepherd husky mix grows around other pets, they naturally become pretty friendly.

When it comes to white Siberian huskies, they are also OK with families and children, but they have a wild character. Siberian huskies have a high hunting drive for smaller creatures like mice, bunnies, and cats due to their wild heritage.

German Shepherd Husky Looks & Aesthetics

As mentioned, a German Shepherd Husky can have any combination of the physical characteristics of their parents. This striking creature has a medium to long head and a strong, somewhat pointy muzzle. A German Shepherd Husky has pointy triangular ears and a set of alert almond-shaped eyes. Its not unusual for this mixed breed dog to have two different colored eyes. The puppies of these parent breeds are well-built, energetic, and athletic.

German Shepherd Husky mixes are super fluffy and their beautiful coat contributes to their attractive appearance. Like German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies, this designer dog has a double coat. It has a tough top coat and an insulating layer of undercoat that is made up of short hair. The undercoat protects and keeps the dogs warm in cold regions. Some of their undercoat will shed during the months of summer, keeping them nice and cool during the hotter weather. All in all, the coat of German Shepherd Husky mixes is not only beautiful, but functional as well.

Mixed Breed Dogs: Are They Crossbreed Hybrid Or Designer Dogs

    Mississauga ON

We know that purebred dogs are those with a documented pedigree in a studbook of a national kennel club like the American Kennel Club or the UK Kennel Club. We also know that purebred dogs are part of a long lineage of dogs with the same or almost the same physical and behavioral traits that meet set breed standards. But what about mixed breed dogs?

Though the terms mixed breed and crossbreed are used as synonyms, they refer to two different dog breeding practices.

Crossbreed dogs are a mix of two purebred dogs. In this case, a purebred German Shepherd Dog and a purebred Siberian Husky dog, producing a German Shepherd Husky mix. The resulting dog is what is often described as a designer dog.

Mixed breed dogs are dogs bred from more than two breeds. This means that a dog could be born from a German Shepherd Husky mix and a Goldendoodle .

In both the crossbreed and the mixed breed situations, breeders intend to integrate each breeds positive traits so that hybrid offspring are produced. For example, cross-breeding or mixed breeding could be about mixing a breed with a friendly temperament but highly allergenic with another hypoallergenic to produce a friendly-hypoallergenic family dog.

Careful, though, about painting a dull picture of cross/mixed breeding. Great purebreds like the Golden Retriever are a product of mixed breeding.

So, are mixed breeds and crossbreeds recognized by national kennel clubs? Lets explore this issue in this next section.

German Shepherd And Husky Mix Color

Like its height and weight, the color of the German Shepherd and Husky Mix will be a combination of the color of its parents. The most common color combinations are brown-black and white-black. Youll see many other different colors, including the following: red, white, cream, blue, gray, golden brown, and light brown. The color of you German Shepherd and Husky Mix is simply a product of genetics.

Husky Mixed With German Shepherd Exercise Requirements

Do Husky and German Shepherd mix dogs need lots of training and exercise? The answer is a YES, YES, YES! Their parents are working dogs, so they have unparalleled energy and can engage in physical activities without getting tired. What they need is a regular exercise to maintain and improve their strength and endurance. Youll need to spend a great deal of time with your dog outdoors every day at the very least.

Your dog needs some off-leash time. Dog parks and fenced yards are great places for this. A Husky mixed with German Shepherd that is free to play stays happy. Playing also mentally stimulates the dog. They get bored when they dont get enough exercise, and they tend to display undesirable behaviors. They will increasingly become frustrated and use their intelligence to do naughty things around your house: digging up, chewing on furniture and other things, non-stop howling, and trying to escape.

Even when youre tired, you have to find time to exercise the dog. What stimulation or exercise your dogs need depends upon their motivation and temperament. If theyre more Siberian Husky than German Shepherd, they might prefer running for hours daily over learning commands. But if theyre more German Shepherd, theyre more happy with doing advanced work activities they tend to enjoy things that give them a s sense of purpose.
