Does The Sable Gene Affect A Dogs Personality Or Health

Kraftwerk K9 German Shepherd Black Sable Puppies at 2 weeks old!

Many dog lovers want to know if dogs of a certain color are more at risk of getting some severe health problem.

While its true that some genes, such as genes for parti markings or a solid white coat carry an increased risk of specific health conditions, there is no indication that the sable coloring damages a dogs health in any way.

The agouti gene is responsible for the sable color. This is a well-known gene that doesnt affect a dogs behavior or health.

In fact, the only things that provenly affect a dogs behavior are nurture and nature. In other words, the way you or the breeders treat dogs is how they will behave.

A puppy that grew up with loving human parents will likely become a well-behaved, polite dog. However, if you abuse your dog, he will become aggressive.

Of course, socialization is necessary for German Shepherds as they are large and protective dogs. If you dont socialize them on time, they can become dangerous.

Still, this is entirely up to the owner and not to the sable coat color or any other coat color for that matter.

The Science Behind German Shepherd Colors

The color of your puppy goes beyond the coat color of their mother and father. It’s not that random! In fact, the science behind the various German Shepherd Dog colors is extensive and a must-know for anyone deeply researching the breed. The sable gene has the most dramatic effect on what color your puppy will become. To learn why, read below…

According to Max von Stephanitz, the German Shepherd Dog’s “pleasing appearance is desirable, but it can not put the dog’s working ability into question.” The word of Stephanitz, the original creator of the German Shepherd Dog, is important to us here at Hayes Haus. It’s clear that he didn’t want the breed’s appearance to come in the way of their working capabilities.

Typical Attributes Of The Sable Gsd

Because sable German Shepherds are usually from the working line, they will have some subtle but significant differences from the show line GSD you might be more used to seeing.

Most notably, they have distinct differences in both physical appearance and drive.

Apart from coat color, working line GSDs have a more compact body thats built to be even more athletic than their show line counterparts.

Additionally, their backs are straight rather than sloped, which makes them less prone to bone and joint issues like hip and elbow dysplasia.

While both are incredibly intelligent and capable of hard work, working lines have much more energy and are generally much more confident. As such, these dogs will need even firmer leadership and much more opportunities for mental and physical exercises.

As for general care requirements, sable GSDs will be much like any other dog of this breed.

They will shed throughout the year and blow their coats twice a year. That means they need frequent brushing and occasional baths. Other grooming requirements will be the same.

Official Recognition Of The Sable Coat Color

American Kennel Club Standard

According to the American Kennel Clubs’s breed standards for the German Shepherd, “The German Shepherd Dog varies in color, and most colors are permissible. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified.” I must note here that the AKC’s classification of German Shepherds can be argued because they’re an organization that values appearance over looks, many times to the detriment of the breed’s health.

Does the AKC prefer dark sable German Shepherd Dogs?

It’s actually a bit surprising that they don’t have stricter standards when it comes to German Shepherd colors. They don’t note any specific restrictions when it comes to AKC-certified Sable German Shepherds, but the idea of washed-out colors being serious faults suggests they prefer darker sable German Shepherds opposed to lighter sable.

Verein für deutsche Schäferhunde

Founded in the late 1800’s, the German SV is Germany’s governing body for German Shepherd breed standards. According to the SV, the German Shepherd Dog should be categorized by the shade of their coat rather than the pigment ‘color.’ They don’t agree with the more American characterization of silver Shepherds, black Shepherds, blue Shepherds, etc…

Dark, Medium, and Light Sable Coat Classifications

Germany’s SV breaks down the Sable German Shepherd breed standard for color into these three classifications:

Sable German Shepherd Puppies

When it comes to sable German Shepherd puppies, when they are born, they can be hard to differentiate from black GSDs or any other dark German Shepherd color. As they grow older, however, the sable coloring will become more obvious.

Despite the sable gene being dominant, this can become a bit tricky. You can never know what recessive genes might be hidden. In other words, you might breed two sable German Shepherd dogs and end up with a black and tan puppy.

Also, sable German Shepherds arent that popular. This is another reason why not many breeders dare to specialize in breeding them.

Black German Shepherd Puppies

All black German Shepherd puppies are born either black, grey or white. The color shifts and gradually changes over the first few weeks, with the black settling in by around the 8-10 week mark.

In fact, only 6.8% of all German Shepherds puppies born in the world go on to be black. And that is accounting for intentional breeding of black Shepherds.

This is also a good time for crate training, which Adams recommends as well. GSD trainer and dog sports enthusiast Alexa Hagood, LVMT, agrees: Crate breaks, even when brief, can help the puppy become acclimated to going in the crate and having some alone time. She notes that this can help reduce the risk of a puppy developing separation anxiety, and recommends beginning with using the crate for feeding times , and at times when the owner needs to do daily chores.

Skeletal Health And Supplementation

Musculoskeletal disorders are debilitating conditions that are often associated with genetic makeup, malnutrition, and stress-related events. Some breeds like the German shepherd, are predisposed to a variety of different skeletal disorders, including but not limited to: canine hip dysplasia, Cauda equina syndrome, and osteoarthritis. These conditions can be a result of poor breeding or induced by intense exercise and poor diet.

Canine hip dysplasia is an orthopaedic condition resulting from abnormal development of the hip joint and surrounding tissue causing the instability and partial dislocation of the hip joint, resulting in pain, inflammation, lameness, and potentially osteoarthritis of the joint. German shepherds are genetically predisposed to CHD and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Germany found its prevalence estimated to be approximately 35% of veterinary cases associated with the disorder.

Osteoarthritis is one of the main contributors of musculoskeletal pain and disabilities that commonly affect German shepherds. Mechanical stress, oxidative damage and inflammatory mediators combine to induce the gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage in the joint, resulting in reduced muscle mass, pain, and locomotion.

Vitamins such as A and D also have crucial roles in bone development and maintenance by regulating bone and calcium metabolism. Adequate levels should be incorporated into a German shepherd diet to promote a healthy musculoskeletal system.

Black German Shepherd Coats

Devotees of the black coated German Shepherd often say their coats are more luxurious and flowing.

Its true that German Shepherds can have short or long coats, and even fur thats a little wavy. But at the time of writing, scientists havent uncovered much about the genes which control the length, curl or texture of dogs coats.

It could be possible that black German Shepherd breeders, having fallen in love with their canines unique looks, were especially attentive to finding breeding stock with long, thick, coat, and propagated the genes for this look!

Black German Shepherds As Pets

Black long haired German Shepherds are beautiful dogs. Their striking single tone comes from a rare combination of recessive genes for the black pigment eumelanin. This sets them apart from the majority of dog breeds, who inherit a solid black coat from a simple dominant gene.

Under that coat, black German Shepherds behave just the same as the rest of their breed. To make sure your black German Shepherd gets the best start in life, find a great breeder, who can prove their breeding dogs are health tested, and unrelated.

    Black German Shepherd Overview

The black German Shepherd was a result of an accident. It isnt known when the first black Shepherd was bred, but it was determined that the gene was considered recessive until solid black shepherds made it dominate. The gene only becomes dominant if the parent is also black.

All German Shepherds carry the black gene, but it isnt typical for their children to stay black after 8 months. A true black Shepherd will be born black and remain black throughout their life. If you have a litter full of brown or white puppies, theres a 0% chance of them turning black.

Its easier to get two black German Shepherd parents to mate than to have one be black or none at all. The likelihood of getting a black Shepherd with two black parents is high. However, it is still possible to get a brown or white litter even with two dominant parents. Tan parents that have the recessive gene have a chance of producing black Shepherd puppies as well, though it is small.
