What To Expect If You Adopt A German Shepherd From A Rescue

The German Shepherd is a very special breed that requires a special kind of adopter. German Shepherds are extremely intelligent, fiercely loyal, and driven to work.

Unfortunately, some of these characteristics are why German Shepherds often end up being rehomed.

People may buy a German Shepherd puppy because they like the way the breed looks, they want a protection dog, or they are unaware of the special needs of this breed.

Faced with a powerful breed dog with high drive, who can often outsmart their person, many people end up surrendering this breed to a shelter or rescue.

German Shepherds often dont do well in the shelter environment, which is why rescues like the ones on this list are so important for saving these dogs from euthanasia.

Most German Shepherds face a significant adjustment period when they are rehomed.

This loyal breed often experiences significant anxiety when they find themselves without the owner they have known, even if that owner didnt necessarily provide them with the best care.

When you adopt a German Shepherd, its important to understand the breed characteristics that may have caused the dog to be rehomed in the first place as well as how responding to being without their family may affect this sensitive breed.

Make sure that you have the time and energy to give your rescued German Shepherd plenty of exercise, training, and structure as they adapt to their new life with you.

Welcome To Garden State German Shepherd Rescue

Garden State German Shepherd Rescue is a foster based rescue relying solely on volunteers opening their homes and their hearts to these unwanted German Shepherd Dogs . Most of our dogs come from other rescues, pounds or shelters and were facing euthanasia due to overcrowding.

Once a GSD enters our program, they receive all necessary medical attention, ranging from updating vaccinations to intensive surgical care, if necessary, and everything in between. We always do what is best for the dog in our care and get them healthy before adopting them out to their new home.

We also provide an owner referral service where GSGSR works with the current owner to provide a new, loving home for their GSD.

Shepherd Help And Rescue Effort

Shepherd Help and Rescue Effort exists to save German Shepherds in the south Florida area, primarily in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach County.

These areas have some of the highest concentrations of homeless dogs, making a rescue like this absolutely essential to save the lives of German Shepherds in need in this area.

Shepherd Help and Rescue Effort primarily rescues dogs from shelters, many of which are high kill shelters.

Many of these dogs might otherwise be euthanized. Frequently, they need medical treatment because they have heartworm disease or orthopedic issues.

Shepherd Help and Rescue Effort is run entirely by volunteers. When dogs come into the rescue, they are treated by a veterinarian, given essential vaccinations, spayed or neutered, and given whatever medical care they need.

Many of the dogs they take in have serious conditions like mange, heartworms, orthopedic issues, malnutrition, etc.

All too often, these dogs have been abused or neglected by a previous owner and require not only medical but emotional rehabilitation.

If you would like to adopt a dog from Shepherd Help and Rescue Effort you can feel confident that they will do everything they can to match you to the perfect dog for your needs.

The adoption process is designed to match potential adopters to both the requirements and temperament of rescue dogs.

However, they will consider placing a shepherd with even novice owners in some situations.

Where Are German Shepherd Dogs From

Jordan – German Shepherd dog available for adoption

Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in 1899 of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd.

Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence.

During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. At the same time, the AKC changed the breeds name from German Sheepdog to Shepherd Dog, and Britain changed it to Alsatian Wolfdog, both attempts to dissociate the dog from its unpopular German roots.

The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. In 1931, the AKC restored the breeds name to German Shepherd Dog.

German Shepherd Puppies And German Shepherd Dogs Rehomed Across The Uk Help And Advice On All Aspects Of Owning A Gsd

Do You Need To Rehome Your Dog If so, please read.

We are currently inundated with requests to rehome dogs. In many cases these dogs are relatively young and due to inadequate training, boundaries and guidance are reactive towards dogs and people. In some instances, they come with a bite history. It is virtually impossible for us to rehome these dogs. A lot of applicants arent prepared to or arent experienced enough to take on a dog with these issues. Often if they have the experience, visiting grandchildren for example, may make taking on a dog with these issues very difficult. As a result, these dogs are ending up in kennels with little chance of finding a home willing to give them a chance.

If you take on a dog at any age, it is a commitment for the duration of their life. If the dog displays behaviours that you are not happy with, it is your responsibility as a dog owner to put in the required work. Lets be honest, this is often due to us not putting in the required work and expecting our dogs to behave perfectly and make good choices without us ever showing them how. This may be done by reaching out to a qualified behaviourist or trainer and even if you get professional help, you will still need to put in the work in terms of putting what you have learned into practice, and by repetition.

Do the right thing by your dog and get help. They would do anything for you, so I think they deserve the same.

Ready To Add A German Shepherdto Your Family

Booster, a White German Shepherd for adoption.

We love Shepherds! All of our volunteers believe that German Shepherds are the cutest, sweetest breed ever. But, we have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that they arent for everyone. They can be high energy, demanding a lot of attention and exercise. They also HERD and protect. Moving objects such as small animals and small children are subject to being herded. If you are looking for a low energy, quiet dog, a GSD probably would not be a good fit.

Keeping that all in mind, the good news is that sharing your life with a shepherd can be very rewarding. A sensitive breed, they can sense emotions and act as calming caregivers to those they care about. GSDs are natural family pack protectors and come to know and love those that you and your family love. When you give a shepherd a safe and loving home, they will thank you with loyalty and love beyond measure.
