Dog Toys For German Shepherd Puppies

Best Kong Toy For German Shepherd Puppies

Golden Retriever Steals Toy From German Shepherd Puppy

KONG is best known for tough, enriching toys meant to provide both mental and physical stimulation.

The classic KONG toy is well-loved not just for its erratic bounce but also because they can be stuffed with snacks and treats to keep dogs occupied for long periods. Plus, theyre made with natural rubber and have variants to suit all types of chewing.

Although the classic Kong is more popular, my German Shepherd named the Kong Wubba as the best Kong toy for GSD puppies.

It is a smaller ball followed by a larger squeak ball. Both balls are covered in a durable reinforced ballistic nylon fabric, which extends into several long strips.

This toy is safe enough for independent play but works best for interactive games like fetch and tug. Most GSDs love to play with it by thrashing, shaking, and whipping it around.

What I love:

  • Squeaker doesnt come off
  • Excellent for tossing and tugging

Possible Downsides:

Discs And Other Flying Chew Toys

Disc-style toys are essentially Frisbees for dogs, although many feature interesting design elements that make them perfect for pooch use.

For example, many dog discs are made from flexible materials. This makes them much easier for your dog to grab when theyre laying flat on the ground .

Others are made with holes in the middle or other things that make them well-suited for woofers.

Do note that the basic disc shape makes it easy for doggos to get their mouths around them and use quite a bit of leverage. So, while some are pretty darn resilient, theyre rarely as tough as other kinds of toys made from similar materials.

They can still work well for power chewers, but theyre generally better-suited for fetch games than general chompin and chewin.

German Shepherd Exercise Needs

While were on the subject of dog toys for your German shepherd, its important to know a little about their exercise needs. German shepherds are extremely active large dogs. They need a lot of exercise to stay happy and prevent boredom.

They have a reputation for being somewhat high-strung, and without plenty of activity to keep them occupied, they might resort to destructive behavior to get your attention. Thats why youll want to make sure youve got lots of fun toys to occupy your GSDs time.

Your German shepherd dog will need a minimum of 2 hours of exercise each day. Ideally, that includes some walks around the neighborhood or out in nature. Its good for your both.

You also want to provide some off-leash exercise time within a safe area. As with all large breeds, its a good idea to engage them in obedience training, and you might want to provide them with some specialized training as can be done with the obstacle course toy weve highlighted below.

Many veterinarians also recommend that you dont do the two hours of exercise all at once. Rather, its a good idea to spread that out over the course of the day.

Your German shepherd will be a loyal friend who will just love spending lots of time with you exploring and playing. The toys weve highlighted above are an excellent way to engage your best friend in some quality playtime.

Training Goal #: Begin Obedience Training

The German Shepherd Dogs work ethic is legendary, and you can encourage your dogs best working traits with early and ongoing training. GSDs excel at obedience, so begin teaching your puppy basic commands like sit, down, and stay, as well as loose-leash walking, from an early age. Enrolling in a puppy obedience class can be extremely helpful both for teaching these commands as well as socialization, and its not too early to begin thinking about CGC training as well.

Gsds Are Incredibly Smart

German Shepherd Pup plush animal toy by Aurora

If youre a German Shepherd owner, you have a strong suspicion your dog might actually be smarter than you are. After all, what cant your dog do? These dogs are known for their intelligence and many can learn a new behavior in only a few repetitions. In addition, they have a legendary desire to cooperate and work with us, a trait many see as a wish to please their humans. No wonder this breed excels at so many activities and is a top Obedience competitor. Because German Shepherds are one of the brightest breeds, be sure to be consistent, use positive reinforcement-based methods, provide plenty of mentally stimulating toys, and play brain-challenging games.

Get Your Pet The Best Puppy Food Australia Has To Offer

Puppies need frequent meals as they are growing, especially if you want them to properly develop their hip bones. When feeding your pup, you could refer to this chart:

  • 8-10 weeks: morning, midday, afternoon and evening meal
  • 10 weeks 4 months: morning, midday and evening meal
  • 4 6 months: morning and evening meal

As they get older, dogs will eat less and will need one or two meals throughout the day. Your German Shepherd’s energy level and overall condition will depend on the food quality they eat. You should choose high-quality food appropriate for their age and specifically made for large breeds.

A healthy and fit dog is less likely to cause any behaviour issues and you will be able to control their temperament. Poor nutrition can lead to all sorts of problems like digestive disorders, infections and diseases. If you don’t know what food to give your dog, do some research and choose a formula packed with proteins that also contain a balanced amount of carbs and fats.

If after all this research you aren’t sure what food to get, you could ask your vet for advice.

Can German Shepherds Be Alone For 8 Hours

Is it possible to leave a German Shepherd alone for more than 8 hours a day? It is not possible to say yes. German Shepherds should not be left alone for long periods of time. If they are left alone for a long period of time, they may engage in destructive or problematic behavior such as digging, chewing and barking.

German Shepherds Will Explore Everything With Their Noses

Youll find evidence of their very thorough sniffing everywhere walls, doors, windows, and more. But compared to other breeds, the GSD ranks near the top in scenting ability. Its no wonder they make such great police and detection dogs. Among many other jobs, GSDs are known for their bomb and drug sniffing work, tracking, and search and rescue.

Toys You Should Avoid For Your German Shepherd Puppy

From the moment you bring your little bundle of fluff home, youre going to want to fill his crate or space with toys and treats. As tempting as it can be to buy a bunch of toys, and it will be tempting, try to resist the temptation. Be selective with what you buy your GS puppy. How To Choose The Best Toys For German Shepherds

Weve gone over why toys are important for GSDs, and nowwell show you what to look for when toy shopping for them. Even though weveprovided a hefty list of the best toys for German Shepherds below, we want youto be confident when youre out shopping for toys on your own too.

The following things are important to keep in mind while toyshopping for German Shepherd puppies or adults.

  • Safety first. Dog toys should be sturdy, chew-resistant, and made with non-toxic, pet-safe materials. Avoid strings, ribbons, buttons, and other small objects that can be inhaled.
  • Size matters. The size of your dog will determine the best size toys for them. Giving small toys to large dogs is a recipe for disaster.
  • Be careful with squeakers. Many dogs have a strong drive to seek and destroy the squeakers in toys. This can result in a choking hazard as well as a huge mess. Supervise playtime with squeaky toys to prevent accidents.
  • Safe for kids usually means safe for dogs. If youre unsure of the safety of a specific toy, or even if its a dog toy at all, you can err on the side of caution by checking the label for safe for children under 3 years of age. That statement means that the toy contains no toxic parts or small parts that a small child could choke on. That means its likely safe for your dog, too.
  • Check the stuffing. Avoid toys filled with dangerous stuffing materials such as polystyrene beads, nutshells, and potentially toxic synthetic fibers.
