How Much Do White German Shepherd Puppies Cost

White German Shepherd price can fluctuate depending on demand, breeder reputation, appearance, coat and eye color and gender. The top priority for a responsible breeder is raising a litter of happy, well-socialised puppies, and settling them into good homes.

This is no cheap endeavour, but beware of breeders who charge an undue premium purely for the color of their puppies coats. This should be of secondary concern, and suggests a breeder might have more regard for pursuing profit than their dogs welfare.

For general purposes, the typical price range for a white German Shepherd puppy ranges from $700 to $1,500.

What Is A White German Shepherd

White German Shepherd

White German Shepherds have been known in Europe since 1880s after the breed was created by German calvary officer Max Von Stephanitz.

However, white-coated German Shepherds were removed from the breed standard in 1933 so these pale-coated dogs could no longer be registered with the club.

But their popularity didnt dwindle in Canada and in the USA, where there were dedicated White German Shepherd clubs.

In 1999, the UKC granted the White German Shepherd status as a breed in its own right. Heres what the breed standard as outlined on the UKCs website says about appearance:

The White Shepherd is a medium-sized, well-balanced, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall, with a medium length, pure white coat, erect ears, and a low-set natural tail that normally reaches to the hock and is carried in a slight curve like a saber. The outline of the White Shepherd is made up of smooth curves rather than angles. Gender differences are readily apparent. The White Shepherd should be evaluated as an all-around working dog, and exaggerations or faults should be penalized in proportion to how much they deviate from breed type and how much they interfere with the dogs ability to work. Working dogs are not to be penalized under any conditions for scars or blemishes that are due to occupational injuries.

The UKC also give a detailed insight into the desired temperament for the White German Shepherd.

Myth Buster #: The White German Shepherd Is Not An Albino German Shepherd

Ive heard people refer to the White German Shepherd many times as an albino German Shepherd. While there are albino German Shepherds, the White German Shepherd is not an albino dog.

An albino is an organism that has deficient pigmentation, which causes pink eyes, pale skin, and colorless hair. The White German Shepherd has pink or black skin, gold or brown eyes, a dark nose and solid white fur.

Can A White German Shepherd Produce Standard Colored Offspring

The answer is YES!

The only way to get 100% solid white offspring is to breed two White German Shepherds, but if a White German Shepherd is bred to a colored German Shepherd, they will throw colored puppies. What proportion depends on whether the non-white Shepherd also carries the recessive white gene.

If the non-white carries the recessive white gene, the puppies will have a 50/50 chance of being white or colored.

If the non-white doesnt carry the recessive white gene, all the pups will be colored.

Given that we cannot know what color or pattern a White German Shepherd is masking, it is not easy to determine what colors the pups will be when bred to a non-white German Shepherd.

History Of The White German Shepherd Dog

Pure white AKC German Shepherd Puppies Peoria

Believe it or not, these beautiful dogs almost never came to be. Much of their history is shared with the more traditional German Shepherd Dogs that are brown and black in color. They were predominantly used as herding dogs in northern Germany during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

During this time, white German Shepherds occurred merely by chance. It was commonly thought that these oddly colored shepherds were weaker and less healthy. Even Adolf Hitler held strong opinions about white German Shepherds.

He felt they were not proper German Shepherd dogs, and mistook them for albino. He even went as far as to encourage breeders to rid their dogs lines of the genes that could result in white coats. Fortunately for us, breeders of German Shepherd dogs located outside of Germany didnt agree with Hitler. In fact, many breeders began selectively breeding in an attempt to get more all-white GSDs.

Common Health Issues Of White German Shepherds

All You Need To Know About White German Shepherds.

White German Shepherd dogs are more predisposed to one particular health issue, and that is spontaneous laryngeal paralysis. This scary, but still uncommon, the problem is when the airway no longer opens wide enough for the dog to properly inhale.

Some studies have been done to see if there is a link between the white gene of their coat and spontaneous laryngeal paralysis, but much more research is needed before anything can be concluded. Sadly, German Shepherds of all colors are prone to some other serious health issues. Most of these issues are inheritable, and reinforce the importance of careful and thoughtful breeding.

The most common health problems for White German Shepherds are hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Dysplasia is a malformation of the bone at the joint. In its mild form, it can cause some pain and limping. However, if it is allowed to worsen, it will likely lead to very painful arthritis.

Keep in mind that high-quality, reputable breeders will offer proof of their mating dogs hip and elbow scores. Other issues affecting White German Shepherds include degenerative myelopathy, heart disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, and eye disorders.

Some White German Shepherd owners report skin issues as a common ailment. Fortunately, skin issues are usually treatable through a careful diet, finding alternatives to bathing , and vet-prescribed help.

How Long Do White German Shepherds Live

When choosing a pet, youll want to know how long they will be around.

On average, white German Shepherds live between 9-13 years old. This is the typical living age for all German Shepherds, regardless of their color. Many factors influence lifespans, such as the original health of the parents, diet and nutrition, and environmental considerations.

Choose a trustworthy breeder who screens the sire and dams health to ensure your white German Shepherd lives a long and healthy life.

Its also important to provide your dog with high-quality food. I am certain that the food you feed your GSD will keep him fit, healthy, and happy. Want to know the best diet to feed your doggo? Then head over to this article, Best Diet for German Shepherds: Nutrition, Types, and More!

What Causes A White German Shepherd

German Shepherds with all-white coats have always been present in litters. However, now that you know they are not albinos, what exactly causes their beautiful white coats?

A recessive gene is responsible for causing a white German Shepherd and appears to have been part of the breeds original gene structure. It masks the dogs true color, making it appear white. The gene is only related to coat color and has nothing to do with health or temperament.

When studying the genetics of coat color, its difficult to predict what colors a white German Shepherd Dog would throw when bred to a non-white GSD because its unclear what color or pattern the dog is masking.

The easiest way to explain it is that the white gene is a recessive gene that works independently of all other color genes. If a dog has two copies of that gene switched on, the white hides the color. Consider a white bed sheet on a grey mattress it conceals the mattresss color rather than changing it.

So, whats the bottom line?

If the colored dog has the recessive gene, the pups would have a 50/50 probability of being white or colored. To guarantee an all-white litter, two white GSDs will need to be bred.

Breeders details

Why is it important to check the breeder before buying a puppy? What should you pay attention to? You need to look for a responsible and ethical breeder, which means that their dogs come from the strongest bloodlines.

Basically, such a breeder should offer healthy puppies with a good temperament. Living environment is also important. It is not the same whether the dogs can roam freely there or not.

The best breeders offer a guarantee, too.

Communication is also crucial because a good breeder will not only be happy to answer all your questions, but will also provide certificates.

If you notice that a breeder stops replying to your messages when you ask for a guarantee or certificates, this means that you should keep looking for another one. That is definitely a red flag.
