As with any breeder, check the certificates for proof of OFA or Penn-Hip. If it is not there on the websight, they may not actually OFA!Look for pedigrees, because hiding a pedigree is a often a clear sign of dishonesty! I have been fooled OVER and OVER, even by people I thought I knew well⦠just because it says they OFA or Penn-hip on the websight does not mean they do.. I would say as many as 30% who say they OFA actually do not. Always ask to see the certificate& pedigree or get the number! Why buy from a breeder who starts with a lie?

We Offer Healthy Happy Ranch

We are located in the Pacific Northwest in the beautiful Walla Walla Valley. Our property sits on ten acres of open fields with plenty of room to roam for our active canines!

I have owned German Shepherds all my life. I always knew I wanted to share this fascinating breed with others.

Several years ago, our family began the hobby of breeding long coat German Shepherds. That’s when my love and deep passion for the breed began.

I believe in improving the German Shepherd breed. I want to provide families with a healthy, stout shepherd with good bone structure as well as good hips and elbows. Therefore, I only promote and breed dogs with the correct confirmation through thorough testing to decrease the risk of hip/elbow dysplasia that commonly occurs in this breed.

Our dogs come from a long line of VA West German Show line German Shepherds. They have been bred for protection, service, and have show potential. And, of course, they make excellent family companions.

A Temperament To Cherish

Temperament is our number one focus in our breeding program. Though each dog has itâs own personality that is influenced by itâs environmental experiences, itâs temperament is inherited and will largely influence how the dogâs character develops. It is an absolute necessity to us that our dogs be good with kids. The breed founder, Captain Max von Stephanitz wrote this of his beloved breed âwell disposed to harmless people, but no cringer, mad about children and always in love.â

White Or Black German Shepherds

German Shepherds can also be entirely white or completely black. The white variety is simply a manifestation of recessive genes, similar to blonde hair in humans, and is not indicative of albinism. Sadly, white German Shepherd dogs are not permitted to participate in most kennel club shows, but they can participate in obedience and agility competitions.

Black German Shepherds are also a result of recessive genes. They will sometimes have white patterns on their chests. Unlike black and tan dogs that start out predominantly black but take on a more typical appearance as they age, they remain black for the rest of their lives.

The Importance Of Grooming Your German Shepherd Dog

The adorable appearance of the German Shepherd dog is known to all. They are very adorable and majestic to look at. German Shepherds can have different coat lengths, and they are:

  • Double coat with a dense outer coat and a softer undercoat
  • Short coat with an undercoat
  • Medium size with an undercoat
  • Long length with an undercoat
  • Some long-length-coated dogs do not have any undercoat

Grooming is essential to prevent the dogâs coat from becoming tangled.

GSDs usually shed twice a year. Proper grooming helps in controlling shedding and keeps the coat nice. Also, regular grooming keeps your dogâs skin healthy and allows you to check if your dog has any parasites and sore patches. Grooming also massages your dogâs skin and improves blood circulation.

The best thing about the German Shepherd breed is itâs easy to maintain. They only need a quick brushing a few times a week. A thorough brush helps to remove loose hairs from their coat and keep the fur nice and shiny. During the shedding time, frequent brushing is required to prevent the mess caused by heavy shedding.

The German Shepherds donât need frequent baths. Giving the occasional bath should suffice to help them clean and smell nice. Trimming your dogâs nails is important to prevent the over-growth of nails. Your dog can end up hurting you unintentionally if the nails are too long. When trimming your dogâs nails, make sure to do it without hurting your dog.

When Do German Shepherd Puppies’ Ears Stand Up

Some puppies’ ears stand up as early as 5 or 6 weeks old, but others don’t have completely erect ears until they’re a few months old. As long as the puppy’s ears start to stand up by about 8 or 9 weeks old, there’s no need to worry. If the puppy’s ears haven’t begun to stand up by then, you should take it to the vet to see if there’s a problem.

What Causes Different Coat Colors In A German Shepherd

Black And Silver German Shepherd Puppies For Sale Near Me

Genes or alleles are responsible for coat colors and patterns in all dogs, not only the silver German Shepherd. Dog experts have narrowed color genes in dogs to a limited number. German Shepherds are relatively easy since theyre more limited than other breeds.

Alleles for color receive influence from their different locations or loci along the dogs chromosomes. Scientists have assigned a name or a set of letters to each locus.

Every set of genes has two copies. These copies can be identical or different. If the two copies are different, then one will usually dominate the other. The dominant copy shows up as a physical characteristic, while the other doesnt appear, and is recessive.

Since each parent randomly passes on one of their two gene copies to each puppy, recessive traits can even make appearances in later generations.

For example, a black and tan gene is dominant over a solid black gene. Two black and tan parents could carry a copy of the solid black gene, but they will only express the dominant pattern. The genes would be at/ab x at/ab.

Only if two copies of recessive genes are present will the recessive gene show up in a form of coat color.

The History And Origin Of German Shepherd Dog Breed

German Shepherd Dog is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. As the name implies, they originated in Germany in the late 1800s.

As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds were used for livestock, herding, and guarding sheep. Back then, GSDs were not considered pets or companions but servants of farmers.

Although German Shepherds weren’t considered household pets, their owners did provide proper food, protection, and shelter.

In the early 1800s, a German cavalry officer named Captain Max Von Stephanitz made it his mission to create an ideal German herder. He co-founded the world’s first club devoted to German Shepherds. Von spent 35 years promoting and refining the wonderful breed.

People finally noticed how strong, smart, and obedient German Shepherds are. So now the military employs them as working dogs. Their intelligence, strength, speed, obedience, agility, and keen sense of smell make them perfect for the job. German Shepherds are also very versatile and make great companions.

German Shepherds became popular in Germany at the beginning of World War I. Their impressive and lovable personalities soon drew the attention of other countries. The AKC renamed the breed from German Sheepdog to Shepherd Dog to remove any association with German roots. In 1931, the AKC restored the breed’s original title: German Shepherd Dog.

Different Coat Types For Gsds

German Shepherds have either a medium coat or a long coat. They both are double coats, having a denser guard layer over a softer undercoat.

  • Medium coat dogs: The medium-coat German Shepherds have a shorter undercoat and a longer topcoat that is stiffer than the long coats. This type of GSD sheds year-round, but they typically do not shed heavily. The AKC does allow both short and long coated German Shepherds to compete in dog shows, but the UKC only allows short coats.
  • Long coat dogs: The long-coat shep has a dense undercoat that is shed once or twice per year in addition to their topcoat being lost around this same time. These dogs have more difficulties tolerating hot or humid climates because they will overheat quickly if their topcoat is too thick. Although you may be tempted to shave your German Shepherd to cool them down, dont. As part of their genes, they shed and blow this part of their coat.It will really mess up this process if you shave them. You can see the longcoats we currently have available for sale here.

Additionally, long coats are known as fluffies and medium coats as shorthairs.

FAQ About German Shepherd Puppies

Does Silver Colour Affect Health

Coat color affects the health of some breeds, but that is not the case for silver German Shepherds. Their glorious color has no bearing on their health.

They are, however, prone to certain health conditions, but that has nothing to do with their coloration. Their health correlates with that of other German Shepherd types.

Hip and elbow dysplasia are some of the most common health-related complications in this breed. Instead of looking for relations between health and coat color, one should look at the health condition of parent dogs. Parents with high scores for hips and elbows should reduce the chances of puppies developing these conditions.

However, sometimes these complications arise well past a studs breeding age. By then, puppies with dysplasia risk are already bred and sold. Silver German Shepherds are a relatively healthy breed. However, like most breeds, they are prone to some conditions. These are:

  • Osteochondritis dissecans
  • Degenerative myelopathy
  • Von Willebrands disease

Dont worry, though, as you can manage many of these conditions. For example, my German Shepherd has arthritis of the spine, but she is doing just fine with exercise modification and prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatories.
