What Are Chewable Flea And Tick Preventives

There are three drugs in the category of chewable flea and tick preventives: Nexgard, Bravecto and Simparica.

Nexgard and Bravecto were approved in the US in late 2013 and early 2014. Simparica came out in March 2016.

The dosing schedules are once a month for Nexgard and Simparica and once every three months for Bravecto.

How Oral Flea And Tick Preventives Work

These flea treatments are oral medications. The drugs come in a soft chew that your dog can eat like a treat. After your dog takes the chew, the drugs circulate in the blood, and when a flea or tick bites your dog, its exposed to the chemical. This will kill fleas and ticks.

All three drugs are pesticides that work by attacking the nervous system of the fleas and ticks, causing death. The excerpts below from the manufacturers Prescribing Information explain the mode of action of these drugs

Nexgard

Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline family, shown to bind at a binding site to inhibit insect and acarine ligand-gated chloride channels, in particular those gated by the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid , thereby blocking pre- and post-synaptic transfer of chloride ions across cell membranes. Prolonged afoxolaner-induced hyperexcitation results in uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system and death of insects and acarines.

Bravecto

Simparica

That means once your dog takes one of these drugs, if she has any side effects, you cant remove the drug from her body.

Checking For Ticks On German Shepherds

If you werent able to prevent your dog from getting ticks, then you will want to know the places where they are most likely to appear on your dog. Remember, ticks can latch on anywhere on your dogthese places just require a bit of special attention.

  • Up by the ears and behind the ear flaps
  • On the eyebrows
  • Near the shoulder blades and back
  • The upper, meaty part of the leg

Remember that ticks are looking for blood, so they are prone to attaching themselves in areas where blood can be easily found.

Why Flea And Tick Prevention Is Important

In addition to being uncomfortable for your dog, fleas are also the leading cause of tapeworm, a parasite whose larvae is carried by fleas. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and other serious conditions.

Dr. Andrea Tu of Park East Animal Hospital in New York City recommends regularly running a flea comb throughout your dogs coat to check for fleas. Also, be on the watch for flea dirt, little black specks usually found on a dogs belly or around the tail. Vacuuming the home and spraying flea and tick insecticides on shaded areas in the yard can also be useful in keeping any potential flea problems at bay. Some people prefer the more natural option of using nematodes, an organism that feeds on flea larvae, on their yards. Other popular yard pest control products use essential oils as a deterrent.

After visiting woody areas or spending a lot of time outdoors, give your dog a tick check, looking him over for any embedded parasites. If you spot a tick on your pet, carefully remove the tick from your dog, preferably with a specialized tick-removal tool, and contact your vet in case further treatment or testing is necessary.

How Does My Dog Pick Up Fleas And Ticks

How to use a Flea Comb on a German Shepherd

Fleas and ticks are a source of annoyance and potential health threat in every part of the US. While the seasons will affect the activity of these insects, it is possible to pick up fleas or ticks at any time of the year. This is especially true because these insects can thrive in our homes. Dogs and cats which spend time outdoors are at equal risk of picking up fleas. However, because dogs spend a larger amount of time outdoors, they are at a higher risk than cats for ticks. While not as common, fleas and ticks can also enter homes from visiting pets and on people’s clothes.

What Adverse Drug Event Reports Say

Dog owners often ask, What is the safest flea and tick prevention for dogs? Well, its not these chewable drugs.

Every drug has side effects and so we wanted to review the Adverse Drug Event Reports submitted to the FDA. But the FDA has made it near-impossible to find these ADE reports on their database. Luckily, thanks to veterinarian Dr Elizabeth Carney, we were able to find some information.

Back in November 2014, when Nexgard and Bravecto were first introduced, Dr Carney wrote about the new chewable drugs on her blog. And then she started receiving comments from people whose dogs were already experiencing side effects after taking these preventives. She wanted to find out more. So she filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain the reports and received a number of ADEs for Nexgard and Bravecto. Dr Carney has generously made these reports available on her website.

ADE Reports For Nexgard And Bravecto

There are specific ADE reports for Nexgard and Bravecto for the period January through March 2016. The results are very similar for both drugs. Dr Carney didnt get any reports for Simparica as it was too new at the time.

Vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea are the most common side effects reported. Seizures are quite high on both lists, with 22 each for both Nexgard and Bravecto for the first quarter of 2016. Nine deaths are reported for each drug for the same period. For Nexgard, five of the nine deaths were by euthanasia.

Check Your German Shepherd Daily For Fleas And Ticks

During the warmer months, make sure to check inspect your german shepherd daily for fleas and ticks, especially if they spend a significant amount of time outdoors. Often times a sign of fleas will be flea dirt, the waste product that fleas leave behind in your dogs fur. A flea comb is a simple tool that will help you discover these pests on your german shepherd.

It should be noted that if your dog is already infested with fleas, youre going to need to first rid them of the bugs before a natural flea repellant strategy can be effective.

The influx of unapproved flea treatment for dogs in the early 2000’s, and specifically spot-on treatments, led the Environmental Protection Agency to issue a warning in 2010 about possible toxic reactions to flea medicine for dogs. This resulted from a rash of dog fatalities attributed to the inappropriate use of some products.

Here is a link to the EPA article from AVMA.org.

Diagnosis Of Pyrethrin And Pyrethroid Toxicity In Dogs

The onset of signs that your dog has been poisoned by a topical, dip, oral, spray, or collar flea and tick medicine can range from a few hours to a few days. When you use a substance containing an ectoparasiticide on your canine family member, always record the amount, day, and time of use. A reaction can occur at any time, even if your pet has had the product used on him before.

When you bring your pet to the veterinary clinic, the care team will ask for the history of what product was used, and when it was applied or given. If possible, bring the container or packaging with you.

Your veterinarian will base her diagnosis on clinical signs, a urine sample, and a serum blood test. Detection through urine or blood is not always definitive. This is why bringing the packaging is so important. At the very least, be aware of the name of the product and how much you used, if possible.
