What Were Looking For

Pet Hair My German Shepherd VS iRobot Roomba i7 Who Wins?

Run time: Any cordless-vacuum owner has experienced this: Youre in the middle of a clean when it abruptly turns off. Knowing the run time helps you avoid the aforementioned scenario and will give you a sense of how long your robot vacuum will actually be buzzing around your house.

Capacity: All robot vacuums are bagless, but some have larger bins or dust boxes than others. Those will usually be able to pick up more dust, dirt, and pet hair and clean more for longer.

Other Robot Vacuums To Consider

The vacuums below didnt make our top 3, but they are still worth your consideration because they may fall more in line with your budget or have features that are more important to you.

If you want something thats slightly more budget-friendly but doesnt have all the bells and whistles of our top 3 picks, the Roomba 675 is a dependable robot vacuum. Its suitable for those interested in a robot vacuum but doesnt want to invest a ton of money.

This vacuum works best in homes with lower-maintenance dogs who have short hair. The bristle style brush roll can tangle longer pet hairs, so we dont recommend this for households with heavy shedding, long-haired dogs.

This is an excellent starter model if youre interested in a robot vacuum but arent ready to invest $500+ in one,

Pros

  • 1-year warranty and 60-day money-back guarantee
  • Not suitable for homes with long-haired, heavy shedding dogs
  • It doesnt self-empty, but its bin is 0.6 liters
  • Doesnt resume vacuuming after recharging
  • Cannot set it to clean a specific room

Price

This is the first robot vacuum I purchased for my home, and I love it. I have a hound mix, and she sheds close to what a Labrador Retriever does. I also have two young kids who love to drop crumbs everywhere. So this vacuum has been a tremendous help.

Pros

  • It doesnt self-empty, but its bin is 0.82 liters
  • Cannot set it to clean a specific room

The third vacuum on our list is the Shark RV1001AE IQ, a powerful little machine that offers great features for the price.

This bagless robot vacuum has a self-emptying base that can hold up to 45 days of dirt and debris, and it promises deep-cleaning power on both carpets and hard floors.

And if thats not enough, you can also control the vacuum with voice commands using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Lastly, it has self-returning capabilities so it can find its way back to the charging dock and pick up where it left off, making it a truly intelligent appliance.

One of the downsides to the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot was that some users had noted that it could take a long time for the unit to return to its dock.

Additionally, the self-emptying feature didnt always work as intended, and the dust bin and filter still needed to be checked and cleaned every few days.

Our Pet Vacuum Testing Methodology

We put each vacuum in this guide through several tests. The most important factors to consider when buying a vacuum are how well it picks up pet hair on a variety of surfaces and how easy it is to use, empty, and maintain.

Here’s a breakdown of how much of each material the top picks cleaned up on each surface in our tests:

Surface – Material

n/a

Here are the main attributes we look at and how we test them:

Carpet cleaning: One at a time, I poured 100 grams of different substances on a 5-square-foot patch of carpeting. I used 100 grams of flour, coffee grounds, and cat litter 50 grams of Cheerios and a 1-gram mix of cat and dog fur of varying lengths. Then I vacuumed up as much of each substance as I could in 30 seconds. Finally, I compared the weight of the dustbin after vacuuming to its starting weight to determine how much of each material the vacuum collected.

Hardwood cleaning: The process was the same as with carpet cleaning, only the tests were conducted on 5 square feet of hardwood flooring.

Furniture cleaning: I poured 50 grams each of cat litter and flour plus the 1 gram pet hair mix on a chair with fabric upholstery. I used the manufacturer-recommended cleaning configuration for furniture. Again, to determine how much debris the vacuum collected in 30 seconds, I compared the weights of the dustbin before and after sucking up each material.

Dirt Devil Razor Pet Bagless Upright Vacuum

This lightweight, bagless pet vacuum cleaner is a bargain buy. It may not have all the bells and whistles of some of the pricier vacuums available, but its swivel steering allows for 180-degree movement to easily sweep up pet hair in hard-to-reach spots. Pet hair doesnt stand a chance with the Spin4Pro Premium Pet Brushroll designed specifically to pick up pesky pet hair.

Overall, reviewers rave about how well this vacuum works, and note its comparable to many of the higher-priced vacuums on the market.

This vacuum may not have all the bells and whistles of more expensive models, but it does a decent job at its most important function: removing pet hair and dirt from floors.

Which Robot Vacuum Is Best For Dog Hair

A robot vacuum with anti-tangle technology and strong suction power will be the best robot vacuum for dog hair. Anti-tangle brush avoids tangling hair with the motor, while strong suction power will pull hair to the dustbin. In this article, I reviewed the iRobot Roomba i7+ and put it to number one on the list.

Dyson Ball Animal Upright Vacuum

1000+ images about Hoover Vogue Vacuum Cleaners on Pinterest

If youre ready to do some deep cleaning, this vacuum is here for you. Its expensive, but according to the hundreds of people whove left reviews about it, the Dyson Ball Animal Upright is worth the investment.

Beyond having the best in basically every category from suction to filtration, this vacuum is designed for homes with pets, with a tangle-free turbine tool that removes hair. Instead of filters, this vacuum uses whole-machine HEPA filtration, making it both asthma- and allergy-friendly. The cleaner head adjusts automatically to the type of surface it is rolling over, from hard floors to carpets and back again.

There are two downsides: One, the internal fine mesh screen can get clogged if youre dealing with a lot of pet hair. Its relatively easy to clean, but youll have to take apart the vacuum to do so. Two, some reviewers complain of its weight, so if lightness is a factor for you, this may not be the right choice.

Best Pet Hair Vacuums For Allergies

Its estimated a whopping 10-20% of the population is allergic to pets. However, according to one study, even if allergic people are advised to give up their pets by the doctor, only one in five people did.

A secreted protein released by dander and saliva is to blame for allergies. These allergens are sticky, clinging to pet fur as well as clothing, mattresses, drapes, or bedding for long periods. They also stay suspended in the air for several hours.

Vacuuming frequently can keep allergens from piling up. The single most important key to effective vacuum cleaning is to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which removes 99.97% of all tiny particles.

Once you have the right vacuum, make sure you empty it outside in your outdoor garbage can to prevent spreading the trapped allergens in your home.

What Else We Tested

We tested 22 vacuums for this guide. These are the ones that didn’t make the cut.

What else we recommend and why:

Black+Decker Powerseries Extreme Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner: The versatile, user-friendly Powerseries Extreme vacuum cleaned well on all surfaces, has mess-free emptying, and is lightweight in its handheld configuration. However, the battery has a short run time and long charge time and left behind pet hair when cleaning hardwood and carpeting.

Bissell MultiClean Allergen Lift-Off Pet, Model 2852: This and the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind were the best upright vacuums we tested. We decided to include the CleanView Swivel Rewind because it’s more affordable and did a better job of picking up pet hair. Still, if you find the MultiClean Allergen Lift-Off Pet on sale for cheaper, consider picking it up, especially if your home is heavily carpeted.

Bissell ICONpet Edge, Model 2894A: The ICONpet was easy to use, had one of the longest battery run times, and charged the fastest. It also did a great job of sucking up cat litter and flour on furniture in its handheld configuration. Emptying the dustbin was mess-free. However, it left behind 23% of the pet hair on carpet and furniture.

What we don’t recommend and why:

Shark Vertex Ultralight DuoClean PowerFins, Model HZ2002: This corded stick vacuum showed promise, initially picking up all of the materials except flour. As I used it more, I noticed that debris was escaping from the dustbin. This was a deal-breaker.

Here’s what BuzzFeed Shopping Editor John Mihaly has to say about how effective “Bobby” is: “Got a chance to test out the RoboVac X8 and it immediately replaced our old robo-vac . Anyway, Bobby 2.0 here gets the job done all the time, every time. With two small kids and an even smaller dog, our apartment floors and rugs take a daily beating . The set-up was easy, the X8 never runs out of juice, and it accurately mapped our floorplan the first time. Cons: Gets stuck easily, can’t set up no-go zones, can’t clean furniture

If you have pets that shed heavily and are tired of vacuuming every day, a robot vacuum may be your best bet. Since these robots try to pack a lot of features into a small space, they tend not to have the suction power or dustbin capacity of other vacuums. For daily, automated cleaning, though, a robot vacuum is indispensable.

Since robot vacuums have a mind of their own, I put them through a different testing methodology. You can read more about how we test in our robot vacuum guide.

Pets are sometimes skittish around robot vacuums. Fortunately, the SpinWave is one of the quietest models I’ve tested. On high suction, it’s 65 decibels , and it’s just 58 decibels on quiet mode.
