Eventually, people started noticing their strength, intelligence, and obedience traits. Hence, military forces have started employing German Shepherds as working dogs. Their intelligence, strength, speed, obedience, agility, and a keen sense of smell made them ideal as working dogs in the military force. The GSDs versatility is what made them capable-working dogs and peoples favorite companion.
Today, GSDs are not only considered as one of the most favorite household pets. What Is Their Temperament Like
There is no discernible difference between the temperament of a long coat German Shepherd and a normal short coat dog.
For a long time they’ve been unfairly labelled as being difficult, but sadly this really stems from them not being accepted due to falling outside the normal breeding standard.
Long haired German Shepherds we’ve raised here at Regis Regal have gone on to be used as search dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs and therapy dogs. There’s no reason long coats can’t perform as well or better than short coats – and they do look quite incredible at the same time!

How Much Does A Long Coat German Shepherd Cost
Whilst a long coat can be a far more desirable dog for some people, when it comes to price they can actually work out around the same price, or even cheaper, than a standard German Shepherd. This is because a long haired dog can’t be registered with the AKC as they’re not considered true to the standard breed.

Grooming is essential to prevent the dogs coat from becoming tangled. GSDs usually shed heavily twice a year. Proper grooming helps in controlling shedding and keeps the coat nice. Also, regular grooming keeps your dogs skin healthy and allows you to check if your dog has any parasites and sore patches. Grooming also massages your dogs skin and improves blood circulation.
The best thing about the German Shepherd breed is its easy to maintain. They only need just a quick brushing a few times a week. A thorough brush helps to remove loose hairs from their coat and keep the fur nice and shiny. During the shedding time, frequent brushing is required to prevent the mess caused by heavy shedding.
The German Shepherds dont need frequent baths. Giving the occasional baths should suffice to help them clean and smell nice. Trimming your dogs nails is important to prevent over-growth of nails. Your dog can end up hurting you unintentionally if the nails are too long. When trimming your dogs nails, make sure to do it safely without hurting your dog.

Where Do Long Haired German Shepherds Come From
Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. In 1899, a dog club called the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde e.V. was founded by Captain Max von Stephanitz. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the 1900s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It wasnt until this past decade, when the SV and FCI approved the change in conformation standards, that long coat German Shepherds became officially accepted into club breeding standards.

Should I Trim My Long Haired German Shepherd’s Coat
The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs and then thin the bushy tail.
Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
